Graduate Assistant
- First Year Experience
- Fall 2026 in UCMO
- Warrensburg, MO. The First-Year Experience is designed to help students excel in the classroom and adjust to life as a Mule. FYE aims to promote first-year student engagement and persistence in the sophomore year. FYE empowers students to develop by building a foundation for their success through comprehensive programming. FYE enhances students’ and families’ transition to, connection with, understanding of, and engagement within the UCM community.
FYE offers a variety of programs, including the following:
Kickoff – four-day fall orientation program UNIV 1400 Freshman Seminar – course for all new first-year students (Varies). FYE staff work with many student leaders, including the Mule Team Leaders, Peer Mentors, and Success Coaches. The Graduate Assistant for First-Year Experience supports the Director in planning, implementing, and assessing the university’s first-year experience, orientation, transition, and retention programs and services.
The Graduate Assistant works closely on the execution of major programs such as Kickoff (Freshman, Transfer, International, and Parent/Family), and UNIV 1400 Freshman Seminar.
- Assist the Assistant Director of First-Year Experience in developing, implementing, staffing, and assessing FYE events.
- Develop a weekly e-newsletter blast for UNIV 1400 instructors regarding campus events, important dates, and training.
- Assist UNIV 1400 instructors as needed, including securing resources and gathering data.
- Assist in the development and implementation of FYE marketing efforts, including creating, producing, and editing publications and social media.
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, training, mentoring, and supervision of FYE Executive and Student Leadership Teams.
- Research high-impact programs focused on first-year student orientation, transition, and retention and make recommendations for implementation and enhancements of current programming.
- Coordinate a program held during the spring semester to prepare first-year students to transition to next steps.
Education:
- Bachelor s Degree Required
- Currently admitted to a UCM graduate degree program
- 3.0 or higher graduate level GPA if previous graduate level courses have been taken
- 2.7 or higher undergraduate level GPA if no previous graduate level courses have been taken
- Minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 graduate credit hours enrolled for Fall
Experience:
- Preference will be given to those with experience working with First Gen, Historically underrepresented, and Pell-Eligible students.
- Previous experience with new student orientation, first-year experience, freshman seminar, student transition, retention, family engagement, and/or related higher education/student affairs programs.
- Previous experience with coordinating and executing student programs.
- Previous experience advising, supervising, or working with student staff.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
GA Hour Expectations: The assistantship is a 20-hour per week appointment.

The Graduate Assistant will generally work a standard weekly schedule but must be flexible when orientation, training, retreats, and meetings are in session. Some evening and/or weekend work is required.
Scholarship: Students filling a Graduate Assistantship (GA) position are eligible to receive a graduate tuition waiver, a graduate non-resident tuition waiver (if applicable), and a graduate mandatory fees waiver. The scholarships are in the form of a waiver and the funds are not deposited into the student’s personal account. Instead, the student’s bill is reduced by the amount of the scholarship awarded.
If the maximum amount of the scholarship is not used, the remainder is not paid to the student in any form and unused scholarship money cannot be carried over to another semester.
