The Manager, Learning Commons, is responsible for managing the daily operations of the UCM Learning Commons by ensuring that effective academic tutoring is provided to all undergraduate students. This position is responsible for administering the Writing Center and Online Writing Lab (OWL) services provided to UCM students and for recruiting and training student tutors, including embedded tutors and supplemental instructors. The Manager, Learning Commons, assures a high degree of constituent service is provided in a walk-in model, on an appointment basis, and to online students.

This position produces marketing materials for the entire Learning Commons to actively promote services and connect with students.

Manage daily operations of the Learning Commons and Writing Center: 70%
  • Administer tutoring services to include recruiting, hiring, supervising, and retaining highly-qualified peer tutors in all high-need subject areas.
  • Develop a comprehensive and efficient schedule for in-person, embedded, and online tutoring services.
  • Approve student tutor payroll and manage appointment availability and staffing using Learning Commons software tools.
  • Ensure tutors adhere to unit policies and procedures to maintain high standards for constituent services, oversee front-desk reception, collect usage data, evaluate student-employee performance, and assess the quality of services and intended program outcomes.
  • Identify gaps in tutoring services and work collaboratively for improvement.
  • Use various student records systems as needed (Banner, Penji, Achieve).
Ensure a high degree of constituent service through all modes of support provided by the Learning Commons and Writing Center: 30%
  • Produce marketing materials for the Learning Commons and actively promote services to all students.
  • Work closely with other faculty and staff to be responsive to student tutoring needs across all modes, including embedded tutoring and supplemental instruction.
  • Train Learning Commons staff to assist students in non-academic needs through referrals to subject matter experts (e.g., financial aid, advising, student records, counseling, etc.)
Education:
  • Bachelor’s required in any program.
  • Master’s degree in any program related to the education and/or support of student services. preferred
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years working with collegiate learners in an educational setting
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience preferred

Special Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:

  • Willingness to support at-risk student populations.
