Job Overview
The System Administrator I will have a full scope of understanding server administration for Windows and/or Red Hat Linux based servers to include planning, installation, documentation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overall support. Provides technical support and troubleshoots on assigned work orders and projects for new and existing hardware and software systems. Installs, implements, configures, documents, and maintains basic network-related activities as it pertains to servers, storage, firewall, and general connectivity with the ability to troubleshoot issues and problems.
Installs, configures, deploys, and documents multi-system solutions that pertain to campus-wide systems, backup systems, server firewalls, security, etc., and the ability to troubleshoot each of the systems.
- Install, document, maintain, and support Windows and/or Linux based servers. Maintain and document server adds, changes, and deletes from server inventory list. Implement and maintain server firewall rules. Effectively communicate with Office of Technology staff, campus users, and vendors. Conduct work efforts under limited direct supervision.
- Conduct tasks pertaining to routing, switching, security, application installations, etc. Monitor and evaluate operating system efficiency. Conduct appropriate backup and recovery procedures of servers, data, operating systems, and tape libraries. Conduct tasks pertaining to authentication (ADS, LDAP, etc.).
- Conduct research activities on servers, operating systems, and layered applications. Create and apply scripts to meet defined needs.
- Troubleshoot server and network related issues and problems. Apply and document server and operating system patches and updates.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (technology or related field). Education may be substituted for experience or vice versa (AA = 2 yrs exp; BA = 4 yrs exp; MA = 6 yrs exp; PhD = 8 yrs exp).
- Experience: Four years applied experience planning, installing, documenting, maintaining, supporting, and troubleshooting Windows and/or Linux operating systems. Two years practical experience with computer security and system analysis procedures. Demonstrated ability to research, identify, troubleshoot, and correct server and system problems using diagnostic tools. Preferred experience in enterprise technical environment, switching, routing, and server/network security. Organizational ability for project management and experience with load balancers and proxy servers such as Netscalar and IPVS.

- 30.25% (staff) and 6% (faculty) defined retirement contribution, paid by the university.
