School Nurse
The Warrensburg Middle School School Nurse maintains smooth and efficient operation of the school health services program, ensuring maximum positive impact on the educational environment. The position reports to the Health Services Coordinator and Building Principal.
Qualifications- Degree:
Registered Professional Nurse (R.N.) or Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. - License:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, licensed to practice in the state of Missouri. Current license copy must be on file in the office of the superintendent. - Preferred experience in public school, public health, or related fields, computer use and excellent human relation skills.
- Apply nursing theories to manage common acute and chronic conditions, injuries, child abuse and neglect, adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, poverty, racism, and environmental health issues.
- Implement district policies for caring for students who become ill or injured at school, contacting the district nurse when appropriate and notifying her of all significant incidents.
- Render first aid and appropriate nursing care to students and staff per the District Health Services Manual; release students to parents or medical personnel when further care is required.
- Collect and systematically document health and developmental information to perform nursing assessments and prioritize actions.
- Collaborate with the District School Nurse to establish a nursing diagnosis and develop an Individual Health Plan (I.H.P.) for students with health needs.
- Implement nursing actions guided by the care plan and assess student responses to promote, maintain, or restore health.
- Assist students and staff with health maintenance needs; notify parents of students’ health status and promote wellness and self‑care.
- Arrange and assist in faculty and administrator training sessions on health topics impacting students.
- Assist in developing Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.) for students when indicated by health or developmental status; communicate modifications with the district nurse and school personnel.
- Act as liaison among administrators, faculty, parents, and community agencies to meet increasing health care needs.
- Coordinate planning for the physical needs of handicapped students and maintain stock of all medical supplies, reporting needed items to the district nurse.
- Make referrals, follow‑ups, and communication concerning health concerns via phone, written reports, or conferences with parents and medical personnel.
- Identify and report suspected child abuse/neglect; communicate relevant information to the district nurse.
- Maintain strict confidentiality, disclosing health issues only to the district nurse and authorized personnel; obtain written authorization for external release.
- Assist in the district communicable disease control program: communicate universal precautions to faculty, staff, and students; follow exclusion procedures; arrange isolation for excluded students; report trends or outbreaks.
- Administer medication and treatments per district policy.
- Interpret immunization laws, maintain computer records, and notify parents of deficiencies to ensure compliance with state regulations.
- Plan, conduct, and facilitate building or district screening programs to identify health deficits; document screening information in permanent health records.
- Supervise accurate documentation, record keeping, and secure storage of student health records, ensuring confidentiality.
- Collaborate with principals, teachers, social workers, and counselors regarding students with frequent absences or current health concerns.
- Supervise maintenance of the school health facility, supplies, and equipment; maintain a stock and inform the district nurse of needed supplies.
- Consult and provide resources for health education needs; obtain approval of hand‑outs from the district nurse before distribution.
- Coordinate health room assistants or volunteers and assist in training substitute health aides.
