Job Summary

Provide health services to students, maintain the school health program, and support the district’s preventive health care program.

Qualifications
  • Degree:
    Registered Professional Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) under direct supervision of an RN.
  • License:
    Graduate of an accredited nursing school, licensed to practice in Missouri with a current license on file with the superintendent.
  • Preferred experience:

    Prior work in public school, public health, or related fields; computer skills; excellent human‑relations skills.
Essential Job Functions
  • Apply appropriate theory as the basis for decision‑making in nursing practice in the school setting, including the management of common acute and chronic physical conditions of childhood and adolescence, child and adolescent injuries, child abuse and neglect, adolescent pregnancy, childhood and adolescent substance abuse, poverty, racism and their effects on child development and health, and environmental health issues.
  • Implement district policies for caring for students who become ill or injured at school; contact the district nurse when appropriate; report significant incidents to the district nurse.
  • Render first aid and/or appropriate nursing care to students and staff in case of accident or illness according to the District Health Services Manual; release students to parent or medical personnel when further attention is required.
  • Collect information about students’ health and developmental status in a systematic, continuous manner to make nursing assessments and establish priorities.
  • Collaborate with the District School Nurse to establish nursing diagnoses and develop Individual Health Plans (I.H.P.) with specific goals and interventions for each student with a health need.
  • Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and effect rehabilitation as guided by the nursing care plan; assess student responses.
  • Assist students and staff with health‑maintenance needs; notify parents or responsible persons regarding health status; promote wellness and self‑care.
  • Arrange and assist in the presentation of faculty and/or administrator training sessions on health topics affecting students.
  • Assist in developing Individual Educational Programs (I.E.P.) for students when indicated by health/developmental status; interpret medical findings for students, parents, and school personnel; recommend modifications in consultation with the district nurse.
  • Act as liaison between administrators, faculty, parents, and community agencies to meet increasing health‑care needs.
  • Coordinate the planning for the physical needs of handicapped students.
  • Make referrals and follow‑ups on individual health concerns by telephone, written reports, or personal conferences with parents and/or medical personnel.
  • Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Communicate all pertinent or new health information, accidents, incidents, and/or communicable diseases to the district nurse; maintain an updated confidential health list.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality, communicating health issues only to the district nurse and those personnel who have a need to know; obtain written authorization for release of information to outside agencies.
  • Assist with the district program for communicable disease control prescribed by the State Department of Health and the school district:
    • Communicate with faculty, staff, and students regarding universal precautions.
    • Follow procedures for excluding students with communicable diseases.
    • Arrange isolation of ill students who are excluded.
    • Report all trends or outbreaks to the district nurse.
  • Administer medication and/or treatments in accordance with district policy.
  • Interpret immunization laws for parents and school personnel; maintain an up‑to‑date computer database of immunization records; assess each student’s status and notify parents of deficiencies.
