Qualifications
  • Degree:
    Registered Professional Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) under direct supervision of RN.
  • License:
    Graduate of an accredited nursing school, licensed to practice in Missouri. Copy of current license must be on file with the superintendent.
  • Preferred Experience:

    Prior work in public school, public health, or related fields, computer use and excellent interpersonal skills.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist in maintaining the school health services program and implement the district's preventive health care program.
Essential Job Functions
  • Apply appropriate theory as basis for decision‐making in nursing practice in the school setting for nurse management of:
    • Common acute and chronic physical conditions of childhood and adolescence
    • Child and adolescent injuries
    • Child abuse and neglect
    • Adolescent pregnancy
    • Childhood and adolescent substance abuse
    • Poverty and racism and their effects on child development and health
    • Environmental health issues
  • Implement district policies for caring for students who become ill or injured tact district nurse when appropriate and notify her of all significant incidents. Be accountable to the district nurse for nursing assessment and care given.
  • Render first aid and/or appropriate nursing care to students and staff in case of accident or illness according to guidelines set forth by the District Health Services Manual. When further attention is required, the student will be released to the care of a parent, designated responsible person, or other medical/hospital personnel.
  • Collect information about the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner to make a nursing assessment and establish priority.
  • Collaborate with the District School Nurse to establish a nursing diagnosis and develop an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) with specific goals and nursing interventions for each student with a specific health need.
  • Intervene and assess responses to the nursing care plan to promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and effect rehabilitation.
  • Assist students and staff with health maintenance needs; notify parents of managing student health status when appropriate.
  • Arrange and assist with presentations of faculty and/or administrator training sessions regarding health topics affecting students.
  • Assist in developing the Individual Educational Program (IEP) for students when indicated by health/development status. Interpret medical findings to student, parent, and appropriate school personnel. Recommend modifications of the educational program in consultation with the district nurse.
  • Act as liaison between administrators, faculty, parents, and community agencies.
  • Coordinate planning for physical needs of handicapped students.
  • Make referrals and follow‑ups on individual health concerns by telephone, written reports, or personal conference with parents and/or medical personnel.
  • Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse/neglect.
  • Communicate all pertinent or new health information, accidents, incidents, or communicable diseases to the district nurse and to appropriate school personnel. Send updated confidential health list with each change.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of health issues, obtaining written authorization for release to outside agencies.
  • Assist with district communicable disease control program:
    • Communicate universal precautions to faculty, staff, students.
    • Follow procedures for excluding students with communicable diseases.
    • Arrange isolation of ill students who are to be excluded.
    • Report trends or outbreaks to district nurse.
  • Administer medication and/or treatments per district policy.
  • Interpret immunization laws, maintain computer database of immunization records, assess status, notify parents of deficiencies.
  • Plan, conduct, facilitate building or district screening programs to identify health deficits; observe deviations from normal growth, counsel parents/students; perform rescreenings, refer based on manual; document in health record and database.
  • Maintain and supervise accurate documentation of records and reports; keep health records separate from academic records and store in locked file.
  • Work closely with principals, teachers, social workers, district nurse, counselors to identify students with absences or health concerns.
  • Supervise maintenance of school health facility, supplies, equipment; maintain stock of supplies, inform district nurse of needed items.
  • Serve as consultant and resource for health education needs of the building; obtain approval of all hand‑outs from district nurse before distribution.
  • Coordinate health room assistants or volunteers; assist training of substitute aides.
  • Monitor school environment for safety hazards; report concerns to principal or district nurse.
