Responsibilities
- Diagnose, adjust, service, repair, inspect, or overhaul aircraft engines and assemblies to return to service.
- Train, instruct, and supervise student help and ensure compliance with FAA guidelines and regulations.
- Ensure all repairs and inspections are performed in accordance with FAA guidelines and regulations, including the employee’s and student employee’s work.
- Perform annual, 100‑hour, 50‑hour, and 25‑hour inspections and make appropriate maintenance log entries in accordance with FAA guidelines, ensuring traceability of all maintenance conducted.
- Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on power plant and airframe systems and components, including overhauls.
- Perform major and minor repairs, and minor alterations as needed.
- Adjust, repair, or replace electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories.
- Disassemble and inspect engine parts, such as cylinders, for wear, warping, cracks, and leaks.
- Listen to operating engines to detect and diagnose malfunctions, such as sticking or burned valves.
- Read and interpret manufacturers’ maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine feasibility and methods of repair.
- Reassemble engines and install engines in aircraft.
- Remove engines from aircraft, using hoist or forklift truck.
- Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
- Service and maintain aircraft and related apparatus by performing activities such as flushing crankcase, cleaning screens, and lubricating moving parts.
- Repair and rebuild aircraft structures, such as wings, fuselage, rigging, and surface and hydraulic controls.
- Test engine operation using test equipment such as ignition analyzer, compression checker, distributor timer, and ammeter to identify malfunctions.
- Accompany aircraft on flights in order to make in‑flight adjustments and corrections.
- Assemble and install electrical, plumbing, mechanical, hydraulic, and structural components and accessories.
- Check for corrosion, distortion, and invisible cracks in the fuselage, wings, and tail using x‑ray and magnetic inspection equipment.
- Clean, refuel, and change oil in line service aircraft.
- Examine and inspect aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and de‑icers, to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problems.
- Fabricate defective sections or parts using metal fabricating machines, saws, brakes, shears, and grinders.
- Locate and mark dimensions and reference lines on defective or replacement parts using templates, scribes, compasses, and steel rules.
- Measure the tension of control cables.
- Obtain fuel and oil samples and check them for contamination.
- Taxi aircraft from flight line to maintenance hanger and vice versa.
- Perform flight line support and aircraft ground handling.
- Maintain shop and ground support equipment.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent, Formal training (specify)
- Three years career technical training to include certification in Airframe & Powerplant.
- Two (2) years general aviation aircraft mechanic apprenticeship as an aircraft mechanic.
- Private pilot ratings preferred.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes or chemicals, heights, and loud noises.
- Can lift 50 lbs.
