Job Description

Elementary Teacher (First Grade)

Reports to: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready for each lesson or activity. The class starts quickly, and students are on task immediately, maintaining a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: Establishes rules and procedures for routine administration, verbal participation, movement, and classroom activities. Monitors behavior during all instructional phases and transitions, stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: Begins each lesson with a review of previous material, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, and presents content using concepts and language understandable to the students. Provides examples, demonstrations, and tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, and adjusts pace as needed. Makes smooth transitions and summarizes main points at the lesson’s end.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Sets clear, firm work standards and due dates, circulates during class to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly, one at a time.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, offers prompt feedback on out‑of‑class assignments, affirms correct responses, and gives additional support after incorrect or no responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Plans instruction aligned with school and system‑wide curricular goals, uses diagnostic information from tests and assessments to revise objectives, keeps accurate records, and matches learning strategies, assessment, and student needs at the appropriate difficulty level. Utilizes human and material resources to support the program.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned or needed; adheres to laws, policies, and regulations; follows a professional development plan and demonstrates growth.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to use classroom equipment such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs. Light work, with minimal force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare or judge observable characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and signal to convey information and receive instructions.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, and instructional materials in prescribed format.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record, deliver, and explain procedures and instructions; communicate in technical or professional languages, including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use mathematical formulas, perform basic arithmetic, work with decimals and percentages, and apply descriptive statistics and inference.
