Fleet Mechanic Positions

Performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized light-to-heavy equipment. Work performed involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles and equipment, including those used in public transportation, emergency services, and construction. Mechanics may work on light and heavy-duty vehicles, buses, trucks, police equipment, and specialized equipment like sewer and water vehicles. Work is performed under minimal supervision.

Fleet Mechanic I position duties include, but are not limited to:

• Working knowledge of preventative maintenance and basic repairs. Perform routine maintenance and inspections on fleet vehicles. Diagnose and repair standard mechanical and electrical issues. Assist with minor bodywork and tire changes.
• Knowledge of policies related to vehicle maintenance operations. Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety practices. Maintain accurate records of maintenance, parts usage, time, and materials.
• Familiarity with automotive systems, repair tools, and diagnostic tools and equipment. Knowledge of automotive systems and components.
• Responsible for ensuring clean vehicles and equipment; maintain shop cleanliness.
• Assists as needed to accomplish a variety of Fleet tasks.

Fleet Mechanic II position duties include Level I duties in addition to, but not limited to:

• Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Experience with a variety of vehicle makes and models. Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, brake, fuel, and electrical issues in a wide variety of auto, heavy trucks, and equipment. Diagnose and repair various types of specialty equipment including but not limited to police vehicles, snowplows and spreaders, hydraulic systems, etc. Inspect, repair, replace, mount/balance light and heavy-duty tires.
  
  Perform specialized maintenance tasks, such as engine overhauls and transmission repairs.
• Assists in the training and mentoring of Mechanic I.

Fleet Mechanic III position duties include Level I and II duties in addition to, but not limited to:

• Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Diagnoses and repairs of major component systems such as engine (gas/diesel), transmission (automatic/manual), differentials, brakes (automotive/heavy duty to include air, abs, and hydraulic), and sub-systems relating to drivability, electrical system, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, and comfort control systems.
• Assist with fleet vehicle & equipment purchasing and disposal. Assist with parts purchasing.
• May serve as the Team Lead and assist the Chief Mechanic with administrative duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Experience

Level I
- Grade 8 - High School or General Equivalency Degree

Minimum of three (3) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various automotive light-to-heavy equipment; understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks.

Level II
- Grade 9 - High School or General Equivalency Degree

Minimum of six (6) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various automotive light-to-heavy equipment; understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks.

Level III
- Grade 10 - High School or General Equivalency Degree

Minimum of nine (9) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various automotive light-to-heavy equipment; understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks. May serve as a Team Lead at the discretion of the Chief Mechanic; must have minimum of two (2) years of prior supervisory experience to be considered for Team Lead.

There can only be one team lead as designated by the Chief Mechanic.

Certifications/Licensures

All Levels

Valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License
- Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers' license is required to be obtained within one year from date of hire.

VDOT Flagger Certification
- Must obtain and maintain within one year from date of hire

Basic Work Zone Certification
- Must obtain and maintain within one year from date of hire. May also have VDOT certifications that are equivalent to Basic Work Zone.

CJIS/VCIN Access, as applicable
- If assisting with Town facility maintenance, must obtain and maintain VCIN contractor level clearance. Will also be subject to fingerprinting and additional background check.

Level I

Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one year from date of hire.

OSHA 10 - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within three months from date of hire

EPA Section 609 Certification
- Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within three months from date of hire

Level II

Class A CDL
- Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one year from date of hire

OSHA 40 - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within one year from date of hire
