Position: Water Safety Instructor I

Grade 3

Non-Exempt

Position Overview

Performs intermediate technical work involving the preparation and/or maintenance of fiscal or related records; does related work as required.

Water Safety Instructor I position duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Lesson Planning:
    Creates safe, engaging lesson activities prior to the class in accordance with the guidelines created by the American Red Cross Program
  • Classroom Management:
    Can maintain a safe, fun, and productive learning environment for students while in swim lessons
  • Assessing Swimmers:
    Completes skill assessments outline by the American Red Cross Swim Lessons and determine if students should move up or stay in levels at the end of every block, or determine if a level is a good fit or not for students and inform the Aquatics Supervisor before confirming if a transfer can take place.
  • Student/Guardian Interactions:
    Able to answer questions from students or their guardians in a professional and clear manner, advise students and guardians of the next steps at end of blocks, and debrief them on the progress of the class.
  • Recording Classes:
    Accurately uploads and records your class records into the American Red Cross Learning center in order to maintain certifications.
  • Preparedness:
    Sets up and cleans up any materials used during classes at the end of the block.
  • Continued Training:
    Able to attend Water Safety Training in-services to practice skills, and receive and give feedback on the swim lesson programs.
  • Additional Tasks:
    Assists as needed to provide a safe learning environment.
Certifications/Licensures

Water Safety Instructor I Level:

  • Must have a valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License upon hire.
  • If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers' license is required to be obtained with one (1) year from date of hire.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification required.
  • If you do not have a American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification then you must be able to obtain and maintain within six (6) months from date of hire.
Success Framework
  • Knowledge of American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim programs and/or American Red Cross CPR/ First Aid and/or American Red Cross Lifeguarding programs
  • Knowledge of industry standards for lifeguards and swim lessons.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials and others involved in performance of job duties; ability to assemble reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
  • Proficient in
  • Ability to use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer, and other office equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Equipment & Tools
  • Town provided computer including word processing software, printer, telephone/cellphone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and other associated office equipment.
  • Swimming aids including diving toys, kickboards, barbells, and cups or similar swim toys that can be used while teaching.
Physical Abilities
  • Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires the ability to stay in the water for up to 5 hours at a time.
  • Work requires the ability to swim at a skill equal at least to that of a Learn-to-Swim Level 3 student.
  • Work requires the ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
  • Work requires the ability to grasp, pull, push, and reach.
  • Work requires the ability to climb and balance.
  • Work requires the ability to talk, hear, listen, and comprehend.
  • Work requires the ability to drive and/or operate mechanical equipment.
  • Work requires visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, sometimes more.
  • Work requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
Work Environment
  • May occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals or gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles or pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • May be exposed to biohazards or blood borne pathogens.
  • Work may potentially involve risk of exposure to electric shock.
