Job DescriptionThis role focuses on structural analysis and design for transportation infrastructure and related structural projects. You will prepare detailed plans, specifications, quantity calculations, and cost estimates while supporting bridge inspections and condition assessments. The position involves using industry-standard design software, contributing to constructability reviews and value engineering, and collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, well-documented projects.
Responsibilities- Perform structural analysis and design for transportation infrastructure, including bridges and related structures.
- Prepare detailed plans, specifications, quantity calculations, and cost estimates for a variety of civil and structural engineering projects.
- Conduct bridge inspections and develop Bridge Condition Reports to assess structural integrity and recommend appropriate actions.
- Utilize industry-standard software tools for structural analysis, design, and preparation of construction documents.
- Support constructability reviews and value engineering efforts to optimize designs for cost, safety, and long-term performance.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, surveyors, environmental scientists, and contractors in a multidisciplinary project environment.
- Ensure that all project documentation, reports, drawings, and technical files meet high standards of quality and accuracy.
- Assist the project engineer in addressing technical and coordination challenges to meet client project delivery goals.
- Participate in projects involving the design and construction of bridges, buildings, and other civil structures.
- Coordinate with clients and municipal agencies, contributing to meetings and project communications as needed.
- Contribute to projects funded by transportation agencies, including those following IDOT standards and requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
- 2–5 years of experience within a consulting engineering firm focused on structural work.
- Experience in structural design for transportation infrastructure and other civil structures.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for structural and civil design tasks.
- Background in civil and structural engineering principles, including bridge design and structural analysis.
- Experience in the design and construction of bridges, buildings, and other structures.
- Familiarity with transportation and bridge engineering practices.
- Experience working on IDOT-funded projects or similar transportation agency projects.
- Comfort with client contact and coordination with municipal agencies.
- Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois, or the ability to obtain licensure after starting the position.
- Strong ability to produce accurate plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working in a multidisciplinary team.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil and structural design.
- Experience with Micro Station for infrastructure and transportation projects.
- Desire to become a Licensed Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois.
- Experience with drainage design or related civil infrastructure elements.
- Exposure to bridge engineering, transportation engineering, and site development projects.
- Interest in ongoing professional development and continuing education, supported by tuition reimbursement opportunities.
This position is based in a consulting engineering firm with offices in Warrenville, IL and Champaign, IL. The company offers a hybrid work model, with new hires typically working three days per week in the office initially, and more experienced staff generally having the flexibility for two to three remote days per week. The organization is flat and mentors junior staff.
The firm emphasizes collaboration among licensed engineers, surveyors, environmental scientists, and CAD/GIS specialists, using modern design and drafting tools to deliver high-quality civil and structural engineering solutions.
Permanent position based out of Warrenville, IL.
Pay And BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $75,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year. ERA offers competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits such as generous medical, dental, and vision insurance; life insurance; 401K with employer match; paid vacation; and holidays.
