Laboratory technicians play a crucial role in a wide range of organisations. They work at the cutting edge of technology, whether in a laboratory or out in the field, performing both routine and unique laboratory testing and offering technical support across their organisation.

Working With Our Ambitious Employers

At Tiro, we partner with ambitious, forward‑thinking employers to create genuinely unique apprenticeship opportunities.

Our employer partners are committed to developing future science professionals by offering meaningful, hands‑on experience in real working environments. As a Laboratory Technician apprentice, you’ll gain practical exposure to laboratory work while earning and building the foundations of a long‑term scientific career.

We’re looking for individuals who are ready to be hands‑on, take responsibility, and build specialist expertise in the science industry.

What will I be doing as an apprentice?

A Laboratory Technician is a key member of the scientific team, supporting experiments, practical work, and investigations by preparing materials, maintaining equipment, and ensuring laboratory environments run safely and efficiently. Working primarily in the lab, they play a vital role in generating reliable results and supporting scientific learning, research, or analysis.

Through our Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship, you’ll gain the technical skills and practical experience needed to succeed in this hands‑on scientific role. You’ll learn core laboratory techniques, develop a strong understanding of health and safety procedures, and build confidence in preparing samples, recording results, and supporting experimental work.

If you’re driven by accuracy, organisation, and making a real contribution to science behind the scenes, this could be the perfect starting point for your career.

What could the future look like?

When you complete a Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship with Tiro, the possibilities for your success are limitless. As a successful applicant, you have the potential to secure a full‑time position within the company at the conclusion of your apprenticeship.

Through practical training on the job, you will acquire new skills and gain the competence and responsibility required for laboratory testing. This apprenticeship program serves as a stepping stone towards a rewarding career in laboratory testing, with the added opportunity for the apprentice to become a registered Science technician (RSci Tech).

This program unlocks a multitude of career paths, granting you access to diverse organisations across various sectors. Whether it's the chemical and pharmaceutical industries (primary and secondary), biotechnology companies, nuclear enterprises, analytical science services, or educational institutions, the doors are wide open.

This apprenticeship can also help pave the way for further educational and professional advancement. You may choose to pursue higher‑level qualifications through one of our Degree Apprenticeships such as Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Applied Bioscience, Applied Materials Science, or Applied Chemical Science.

About You

You’re curious, motivated, and keen to learn. You take pride in doing things properly, enjoy practical, hands‑on work, and understand the importance of following clear processes — particularly in laboratory and regulated environments.

You pay close attention to detail, work well as part of a team, and feel comfortable asking questions when you’re unsure. You approach new tasks with a positive attitude and are happy to learn on the job, spending most of your time working in a laboratory setting.

An interest in science, experimentation, or how practical work supports learning and research would suit this role well. Most importantly, you’re reliable, proactive, and motivated to build a long‑term career in science.

Experience

We value attitude, curiosity, and commitment just as much as past experience. While previous experience can be helpful, it’s not…
