As a Gun Drill Machinist, you will set up and operate gun drilling equipment to produce deep, precise bores that meet blueprint, dimensional, surface finish, and quality requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Set up and operate gun drill machines
- Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T requirements, routers, and work instructions
- Select and set up drills, tooling, and work holding
- Load parts and verify secure work holding
- Monitor coolant pressure, coolant flow, and chip evacuation
- Adjust feeds and speeds within authorized limits
- Control drilling depth, hole straightness, bore size, and surface finish
- Recognize tool wear and perform tool changes
- Troubleshoot drift, straightness, dimensional, finish, and chip evacuation issues
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections
- Use calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, and other precision measuring equipment
- Complete production, inspection, and traceability documentation
- Support preventive maintenance activities
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
- Assist with continuous improvement initiatives and support team training when needed
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to read engineering drawings and manufacturing instructions
- Understanding of GD&T principles
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment
- Ability to maintain accurate production and inspection records
- Ability to work independently and as part of a manufacturing team
- Experience with CNC machining, gun drilling, deep-hole drilling, or precision machining
- Experience in medical device, aerospace, or other tight-tolerance manufacturing environments
- Gun drill setup and operation
- Workholding and part alignment
- Drill selection and setup
- Feed and speed adjustments
Coolant and chip management - Tool wear recognition
- Bore size and finish verification
- Troubleshooting machining issues
- First-piece and in-process inspection
- Teamwork, reliability, and communication
