Job DescriptionThe Paraprofessional assists special education and general education teachers to keep students on task, monitor and reinforce positive behavior, organize instructional materials, keep students hygienic, escort them, record progress, assist behavior management, and maintain classroom order. The role supports relationships with staff and students and plays a vital part in school operations.
Job Responsibilities- Assist teachers in keeping students on task using positive reinforcement during large group or individual activities.
- Monitor or reinforce positive student behavior during breakfast, snack, lunch, playtime, bus rides, field trips, and when escorting students to community environments.
- Help students transition to the regular classroom setting by supporting activities and reinforcing appropriate behavior and social skills.
- Collaborate and communicate with special education teachers and service providers.
- Foster independent functioning of students to maximum extent possible.
- Build positive relationships with staff and the school community.
- Move with students between classrooms if required.
- Complete responsibilities in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in school and community.
- Ensure attendance (≥95%) and appropriate punctuality and dress.
- Participate in district‑provided staff development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Specific Duties
- Under licensed special education staff direction, provide one‑on‑one or small group instruction and monitor learning.
- Reinforce instructional material presented by the teacher as directed.
- Complete the district’s crisis intervention certification program.
- Assist licensed staff in managing student behavior and reinforce appropriate behaviors per IEPs or behavior plans.
- Facilitate safety and success of disabled students in the least restrictive environment defined on their IEP.
- Provide feedback to instructional staff regarding student progress toward IEP goals.
- Promote student independence within the academic environment.
- Knowledge of various disabilities, special needs conditions, tutoring principles, child development, and behavior management principles.
- Skill in working with children in various conditions; one‑on‑one or group supervision; assisting teachers and children with tasks.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Typical duties include stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and seeing.
- Exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly; some duties may require up to 100 pounds occasionally or up to 50 pounds frequently or up to 20 pounds constantly.
