Job Description

A position has been declared open in the Weber School District (in conjunction with the Utah STEM Action Center) for a part‑time Math Mentor. This position is for 5.75 hours per day, for a maximum of 36 weeks (1044 hours) per academic year.

Position Overview

Math Mentors will work with small groups of students in grades 7‑8 within targeted areas of Utah to enhance academic confidence and improve math skills. Utilizing personalized learning math software, mentors from various educational backgrounds will guide students toward greater academic success, offering personalized attention Android support. Mentors will collaborate with counselors, administrators, and teachers to identify students who are two or more grade levels behind in math and would benefit from additional mentor support.

Mentors will gain first‑hand experience in the education system and math intervention, developing valuable management, organization, and volunteer supervision skills by collaborating with professional educators to deliver a meaningful and effective mentoring program. Mentors will receive ongoing support and encouragement from their site supervisors, as well as check‑ins and site visits from Math Mentor STEM Action Center staff and Lead Mentors throughout their employment.

Mentor Responsibilities
  • Lead small group academic mentoring sessions approx. 20 minutes each during the school day, utilizing personalized learning math software and other math materials. The goal is to work with students for 60-90 minutes per week in mentoring sessions.
  • Assist students in setting and achieving weekly goals to foster ownership of their academic and behavioral progress.
  • Meet with the site supervisor and math specialists regularly (once per week) to assess student progress.
  • Maintain daily records of math mentoring sessions, activities, and performance notes for all students using the tracking tool provided by the STEM Action Center.
  • Attend a regional training/orientation (potentially virtual) in August/September with the Math Mentor Program Coordinator and Lead Math Mentor, and participate in ongoing virtual or in‑person training with the Math Mentor Program team.
  • Attendance is an Essential Function of this Position: Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in‑person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on‑site equipment and resources.
Mentor Requirements
  • Experience working with children or youth. Preference will be given to candidates interested in pursuing a career in education, social work, or a related field.
  • Must be a high school graduate and a United States citizen.
  • Must provide required hiring documents, which may include a U.S. birth certificate or passport, driver’s license, social security card, and high school graduation (or equivalent education) verification.
  • Must successfully complete an FBI background check and National Sex Offender Database check prior to hire, in accordance with NSCHC requirements.
  • Possess a working knowledge of basic mathematics (advanced math education is not required).
  • Proficient with basic computer software.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, volunteers, and program managers.
  • Preference will be given to candidates proficient in an additional language (e.g., Spanish, Dine/Navajo).
