Position: Arts Department Adjunct Music Teacher 7 POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Frederick Gunn School, founded in 1850, is a co‑educational boarding and day school serving grades 9‑12 and a postgraduate year.

We are seeking adjunct music teachers to provide private lessons in various instruments. The role includes private instruction, sectional rehearsals, and ensemble participation as needed, with separate compensation for added responsibilities.

Employment

Part‑time, W‑2. Background and fingerprinting procedures required.

Location

All lessons are conducted at the Frederick Gunn School campus in the TPACC practice rooms.

Frequency

Private lessons scheduled once per week per student, lasting 40–60 minutes. Number of students varies by enrollment.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead sectional rehearsals.
  • Cover ensemble classes.
  • Perform with school ensembles as needed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum one year of experience teaching high school students (beginner to intermediate).
Instrument‑Specific Appendices TRUMPET – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental technique, tone production, embouchure development, breath support, articulation.
  • Range, flexibility, scales, melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, basic music theory.
  • Instrument care, tuning, ensemble skills; instruction across classical, jazz, and contemporary styles.
TROMBONE – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental technique, tone production, embouchure development, breath support, articulation.
  • Range, flexibility, scales, melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, basic music theory.
  • Instrument care, tuning, ensemble skills; instruction across classical, jazz, and contemporary styles.
FLUTE – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental technique, tone production, embouchure development, breath support, articulation (including tonguing techniques).
  • Intonation, range, flexibility, scales, melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, basic music theory.
  • Instrument care, tuning, posture, hand position, ensemble skills; instruction across classical, jazz, and contemporary styles.
CLARINET – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental technique, tone production, embouchure development, breath support, articulation (including tonguing techniques).
  • Intonation, range (chalumeau, clarion, altissimo), flexibility, scales, melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, basic music theory.
  • Reed selection and care, instrument assembly, posture, hand position, ensemble skills; instruction across classical, jazz, and contemporary styles.
DOUBLE BASS – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental technique, tone production, left‑hand and right‑hand techniques (arco and pizzicato).
  • Bow control, articulation, intonation, range, flexibility, scales, melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, basic music theory.
  • Instrument care, posture, body alignment, ensemble skills; instruction across classical, jazz (walking bass lines), and contemporary styles.
JAZZ PIANO – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental piano technique, touch, tone, hand coordination, articulation, voicing, stylistic interpretation.
  • Jazz‑specific skills: chord voicings, comping patterns, improvisation, scales, modes, ii–V–I progressions, stylistic fluency (swing, Latin, contemporary).
  • Melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, lead sheet interpretation, basic music theory, practice strategies, listening skills, ensemble collaboration.
VIOLIN/VIOLA – ADJUNCT MUSIC TEACHER
  • Fundamental string technique, tone, posture, left‑hand position, intonation, vibrato, bow technique.
  • Scales, melodic and rhythmic sight‑reading, basic music theory.
  • Instrument care, maintenance, effective practice strategies, listening skills, ensemble collaboration; instruction across classical, contemporary, and non‑classical styles.
