Assistant Farm Manager

Overview

Assistant Farm Manager - Waldingfield Farm is a position at Waldingfield Farm, a certified organic vegetable farm in Washington, CT. The farm operates with greenhouses, high tunnels, and 20+ acres to support a CSA, farmer’s markets, and wholesale accounts.

• Manage and support a team of approximately 12 summer crew members during peak season – provide guidance, quality control, pace-setting, feedback, and mentoring to ensure effective and efficient contributions to farm goals.
• Collaborate with the farm manager/owners – engage in daily/weekly discussions on field operations, production priorities, and team needs.
• Participate in hands-on field work – seeding, planting, cultivation, hand-weeding, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and tractor operation.
• Provide farmer’s market coverage when necessary.
• Identify and address tasks proactively to improve farm efficiency.
• Assist with maintenance of farm equipment, tools, and infrastructure to ensure safety, efficiency, and longevity.

• Experience: Minimum of 2+ full seasons on a diversified vegetable farm; experience managing crews and leading field operations is a plus.
• Leadership & Professionalism: Ability to lead and support a team; professional, personable, versatile, and able to work independently or with the farm manager, owners, and seasonal crew.

  Comfortable operating tractors, farm tools, and related equipment; understanding of basic diversified vegetable agronomy including crop care, planting, cultivation, and harvesting.
• Work Ethic & Initiative: Motivated, proactive, detail-oriented, punctual, and able to anticipate/remedy needs of the farm and seasonal crew.
• Physical Stamina: Able to perform physically repetitive tasks, bend, lift, and carry daily; able to work outdoors in varying seasonal weather conditions.
• Communication & Problem-Solving: Strong interpersonal skills; able to communicate effectively with the farm manager, owners, seasonal crew, and customers; capable of identifying challenges and proposing solutions.
• Attention to Quality & Efficiency: Balance speed and productivity with high standards for crop quality and crew performance.

• Full-Time Position: 40 hours/week, either Mon-Fri or Tue-Sat, depending on farm needs. Season runs March 15 through Thanksgiving, with potential for year-round employment for the right candidate. Peak season may require up to 50 hours/week.
• Compensation: $45,000–$50,000 annually, depending on experience and skillset. Paychecks issued weekly.
