Senior Staff Accountant - Washington, DC
Beacon Hill Financial is partnering with a mission‑driven nonprofit organization in the search for an experienced Senior Staff Accountant. This role will report directly to the Controller and play a critical role in overseeing day‑to‑day accounting operations, month‑end close, and financial reporting using Abila MIP. The ideal candidate will bring strong nonprofit accounting experience, including fund accounting, grant tracking, and compliance, while serving as a key resource to junior staff.

- Oversee and perform general ledger accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month‑end and year‑end close using Abila MIP.
- Maintain and reconcile multiple funds and cost centers in accordance with nonprofit and fund accounting standards.
- Prepare and review financial statements, supporting schedules, and variance analyses for management and board reporting.
- Manage grant and donor‑related accounting, including tracking restricted funds, grant expenditures, and compliance with donor and grantor requirements.
- Assist with budget preparation, monitoring, and forecasting in collaboration with program and finance leadership.
- Ensure accurate allocation of expenses across programs, grants, and departments.
- Support audits, Form 990 preparation, and other regulatory filings by coordinating schedules and responding to auditor requests.
- Review the work of junior accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and support as needed.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and best practices.
- Partner with program managers and leadership to provide financial insights and support operational decision‑making.
- Assist with system maintenance and improvements within Abila MIP, including reporting and process efficiencies.
- Coordinate with external auditors, funders, and accounting partners as needed.
