Position: Accountant (Staff).

Duties

  • Reviews accounting documentation and supporting materials for accuracy and completeness.
  • Records and monitor commitments, obligations, accruals, reimbursements, and other financial transactions.
  • Researches and resolve discrepancies identified during account reconciliations and financial reviews.
  • Reviews financial systems and accounting processes to identify opportunities for system and operational improvements.
  • Advises management on accounting matters, financial system improvements, internal controls, and the financial condition of DOJ-OCIO programs.
Requirements
  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.

Qualifications
Basic Requirement
  • Degree:
    Accounting; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting. The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law
OR
  • Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in accounting, or an equivalent combination of accounting experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional accounting knowledge. Your background must also include one of the following:
  • Twenty-four semester hours in accounting or auditing courses of appropriate type and quality. This can include up to 6 hours of business law;
OR
  • A certificate as Certified Public Accountant or a Certified Internal Auditor, obtained through written examination;
OR
  • Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in accounting or auditing, but that does not fully satisfy the 24-semester-hour requirement of paragraph A, provided that (a) you have successfully worked at the full-performance level in accounting, auditing, or a related field; (b) a panel of at least two higher level professional accountants or auditors has determined that you have demonstrated a good knowledge of accounting and of related and underlying fields that equals in breadth, depth, currency, and level of advancement that which is normally associated with successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in paragraph A;

    and (c) except for literal nonconformance to the requirement of 24 semester hours in accounting, your education, training, and experience fully meet the specified requirements.
In Addition To Meeting The Basic Requirement Above, To Qualify For This Position You Must Also Meet The Qualifications Listed Below
Specialized Experience

To qualify for the GS-12 grade level, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable non-Federal experience. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following duties:

  • Performing accounting operations involving accruals, reimbursements, billings, invoices, collections, and/or financial transaction validations. AND
  • Resolving accounting and internal controls issues and recommend corrective actions or process improvements. AND/OR
  • Analyzing financial data and preparing reports, dashboards, and/or recommendations to support management decision-making.
