Manager of Strategic Purchasing

Job Summary

The Manager of Strategic Purchasing is a key member of the Finance and Accounting team, responsible for strategic sourcing, supplier management, and overall purchasing across the KIPP DC network. The role ensures compliance with internal controls and external regulations, supports procurement operations within Workday, and identifies cost‑saving opportunities through scale and supplier relationships.

Starting salary range: $86,280‑$93,782 (full‑time, hybrid flexibility, headquarters location, anticipated start date April 2026).

About

the Role

The Manager of Strategic Purchasing ensures procurement policies are followed, manages the procurement process for the entire network, and collaborates with cross‑functional teams. The role strategically sources and manages suppliers to secure the best value for KIPP DC.

Location and Type of Work

Exempt position reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Purchasing. Work is primarily at the headquarters office with hybrid flexibility (required onsite one day per week).

Responsibilities

Procurement Operations, Compliance, and Training (60%)

  • Serve as procurement policy expert, ensuring internal and external compliance.
  • Manage the RFP process, coordinate with teams, and lead public‑facing tasks for transparency.
  • Review Finance Committee memos and manage board approval processes.
  • Track procurement compliance activity and lead the federal grant procurement process.
  • Update policies and support end‑user activities in Workday’s procurement module.
  • Provide training and support on procurement policies, procedures, and systems.

Strategic Sourcing and Vendor Management (30%)

  • Participate in strategic sourcing strategy and identify cost‑saving opportunities.
  • Support supplier selection and negotiate contracts with legal and stakeholders.
  • Lead supplier management program, maintain relationships, monitor performance, and update the preferred supplier database.
  • Expand engagement with minority and women‑owned businesses.

Special Projects (10%)

  • Lead special projects such as system improvements, efficiency enhancements, and cost‑saving initiatives.
Requirements & Preferences

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of procurement experience, OR 5 years of relevant experience without a bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of procurement, contract management, or supplier relationship experience.
  • Federal grants procurement experience.
  • Experience in K‑12 education or non‑profit settings.
  • Proficiency with procurement software (Workday preferred) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong organizational, time‑management, and independent work skills.
  • Detail‑oriented team player with excellent communication and problem‑solving abilities.
