What You’ll DoAs an Assistant Counselor, you’ll play a key role in supporting a variety of different Lead Counselors in various programs, and helping to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where campers thrive. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Anticipating program and camper needs, stepping in without waiting for direction, while maintaining respectful lead/assist dynamics
- Supporting Lead Counselors in running daily activities, games, and special events
- Assisting with camper supervision during transitions, meals, pool time, and free play
- Helping de‑escalate camper conflicts with patience and consistency, reinforcing behavior expectations and positive redirection
- Stepping into different programs or age groups as needed to keep camp running smoothly
- Communicating with Lead Counselors and Onsite Leadership about camper needs, progress, and any concerns
- Acting as a mentor and role model for campers and Counselors in Training (CITs)
- Setting a positive example through professionalism, energy, and enthusiasm in all camp activities
- This role is ideal for enthusiastic youth leaders who thrive as key support team members, balancing flexibility, camper engagement, and teamwork in a high‑energy camp setting
- Experience with children ideally between the ages of 3–16, with strong behavior management and redirection strategies
- Proactive team member – You notice what needs to be done and step in before being asked
- Flexible & adaptable – You are comfortable moving between programs and groups to keep camp running seamlessly
- Camper‑focused – You are skilled at de‑escalation, ensuring every child feels safe and supported
- Clear communicator – You relay updates and concerns quickly and clearly
- High energy & enthusiasm – You bring excitement and encouragement
- Problem‑solver – You think on your feet and help staff/campers overcome obstacles calmly
- Full on‑site availability during the summer:
June–August, Monday–Friday- Hours:
camp operates 8:30 am-4 pm with 8:00 am Mondays - Ability to commute to: 3825 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC
- Hours:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be up to date on all immunizations and willing to provide emergency health information upon hire
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, respond quickly to emergencies, and work in an active, outdoor environment
- Pay range: $18‑20/hour

This is a seasonal full‑time, non‑exempt position under the FLSA
