Position Overview

A growing specialty contractor is seeking a Project Engineer, Estimating to support preconstruction and estimating efforts for commercial roofing projects. This role is ideal for someone with a Construction Management degree who has experience reviewing construction documents, assisting with takeoffs, supporting bid preparation, and working within commercial construction or specialty contracting.

The Project Engineer, Estimating will work closely with senior estimators, project managers, operations teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to support quantity takeoffs, scope review, pricing, bid coordination, proposal development, and project handoff. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical, comfortable working with construction documents, and interested in growing within commercial roofing estimating and preconstruction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with preparing accurate and competitive estimates for commercial roofing projects.
  • Review drawings, specifications, proposals, addenda, and contract documents to understand project scope, materials, labor, and project requirements.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for roofing materials, labor, equipment, and related project needs using estimating and takeoff software.
  • Support the bid process by organizing bid documents, tracking deadlines, reviewing scopes, and assisting with proposal preparation.
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Compare and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project scope.
  • Assist with pricing alternates, change orders, proposal revisions, and value engineering options.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, scope review meetings, internal estimating meetings, and project handoff meetings as needed.
  • Coordinate with project managers and field teams to understand labor needs, production rates, material requirements, constructability concerns, and project logistics.
  • Help maintain estimating files, bid logs, vendor pricing, historical cost data, and project documentation.
  • Support project handoff from estimating to operations after award.
  • Assist with developing scopes of work, procurement information, schedules, and bid clarifications.
  • Build knowledge of commercial roofing systems, materials, installation methods, safety standards, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain communication with subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, internal teams, and project stakeholders throughout the estimating process.
  • Identify opportunities to improve estimating accuracy, organization, and workflow efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field required.
  • 2+ years of experience in construction estimating, preconstruction, project engineering, project coordination, or commercial construction preferred.
  • Commercial roofing, specialty contracting, exterior systems, waterproofing, or building envelope experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, bid documents, scopes of work, and construction documents.
  • Understanding of quantity takeoffs, labor, materials, subcontractor pricing, construction costs, and estimating principles.
  • Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Comfortable communicating with subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, project managers, field teams, and clients.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.
  • Exposure to estimating, takeoff, scheduling, or project management software is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting competitively bid, negotiated, or design-build work.
  • Familiarity with RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, bid packages, and project documentation.
  • Knowledge of construction schedules, procurement processes, and project coordination.
  • Experience with public-sector or large-scale commercial construction projects.
  • OSHA certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
