Summary

The Special Projects Editor assists the Manager, Editing in the Division of Board Members mission by overseeing the editorial integrity, presentation quality, and timely delivery of Board publications and other official communications developed by Board staff. The Special Projects Editor oversees the planning and execution of major publications and other high-level communication projects (e.g., selected internal website management), offers editorial support to other high-profile Board communications (e.g., public speeches, testimony, video, and web content), and is recognized as an expert in writing, editing, and publishing written and visually accessible content and materials prepared by Board staff and consultants.

Using standard editorial techniques and broad knowledge of finance, particularly in the areas relevant to the Board, the Special Projects Editor ensures that these materials are logically arranged and accessible, that the language and technical complexity are appropriate for the intended audience, and that the style conforms to Board standards. As directed by the Manager, Editing, the Special Projects Editor may assist in managing unit project assignments, monitoring the work quality of junior staff or training new staff, and leading the unit during the absence of the Manager, Editing.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Collaborates with authors in presenting text and graphic material unambiguously by making substantive, organizational, stylistic, and grammatical changes and by rewriting or making specific recommendations concerning rewrites.

* Recommends approaches to and works with content providers on the presentation and format (web-based or print) of written materials, to best convey the information to the reader.

* Maintains thorough knowledge of Board Publication Standards to effectively communicate and enforce the application of standards to publications and/or other relevant communications projects in own or others' work.

* Serves as managing editor for high-profile, complex, and recurring flagship publications (e.g., The Federal Reserve Explained, Annual Report, etc.) or other content that support the Board's public service mission and that require broader understanding of Board functions, the ability to plan and manage the publishing and review process, and extremely adept interpersonal skills.

* Oversees all aspects of the publication production process from the inception of a project through completion, including providing guidance to authoring contacts on the publications process and branding, design, and usability standards as well as collaborating with other BDM staff as appropriate on project planning, editing, layout, and distribution online and/or in print.

* Assists the Manager, Editing in overseeing the maintenance of various Board-facing web platforms (i.e., Board, System websites or public, System, or Board online manuals); also participates in website development and overhaul projects to lend an editorial usability perspective to sites requested by Board stakeholders and designed and developed by other BDM units.

* Assists Public Information Outreach unit in updating content for the Board's public website (Pub Web).

* Assists the Manager, Editing, in leading the section, and confers with staff members throughout the Board in establishing and maintaining appropriate editorial policy and style.

* May assist the Manager, Editing, in setting priorities; assigning tasks to other section members and supervising the execution and results; recruiting and evaluating new staff members; and other management functions.

* Performs many publishing and editorial functions utilizing hardware and software for all stages of production up to printing.

* Participates with the Manager, Editing, in planning for future use of publishing technology.

* In the absence of the Manager, Editing, may lead the work of the section (in collaboration with or in absence of Senior Special Projects Editor).

FR-26:
Requires (1) exceptional editing and writing skills typically acquired by completion of a bachelor's degree in the social sciences or literature or equivalent work experience; (2) extensive experience in editing and writing, including five or more years of experience with complex material related to the Board's work; (3) a familiarity with digital editing and production methods and information architecture; (4) outstanding ability to work well with authors, managers, and officers;

(5) ability to mentor and manage co-workers and to coordinate the work of other groups involved in the publication process that may report to different managements.
