About the Position

As MPU builds out its Campus pilot program, the Campus Creator Lead is responsible for curating the Campus Program’s brand through engaging, well-produced student-driven stories that function as microcosms of national sentiment. They will field and collaboratively develop student-generated story pitches, overseeing the conceptualization, scripting, producing and editing of student-driven videos for MPU’s central social media channels. They will also provide guidance and training for students creating their own content and building their own platforms.

They must have the technical, narrative, and relational skills to create powerful moments that hook viewers and keep them watching to the end. The position requires a high level of self-sufficiency, strong collaboration and communication skills, the ability to write clearly and meet deadlines, and a desire to engage in key policy debates and grow our audience. Further, they are a natural leader with the ability to instill confidence and provide constructive feedback on effective storytelling to student fellows.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to and working with the Campus Program Manager to plan and execute student-driven video content for MPUniversity platforms;
  • Intake pitches from students, approve pitches, and work with students to develop stories, including;
    • Reviewing scripts
    • Reviewing edits
    • Planning shoots if needed
    • Ensuring the framing of the story fits MPU’s mission
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with students in the program, including hosting office hours;
  • Creating pathways for students who lack equipment, experience, or confidence;
  • Lead trainings for students on various aspects of production;
  • Making strong editorial decisions about what stories to prioritize every day and how they should be framed such that they’re factual and compelling;
  • Developing an evaluation rubric to determine which stories qualify for MPU main channels;
  • Developing a content strategy for each MPU campus event format;
  • Facilitating student-generated content at MPU campus events;
  • Staying updated on campus events schedule and communicating consistently with the Events Manager;
  • Executing best practices for achieving editorial and video excellence on Tik Tok, Instagram and other social media platforms;
  • Curating an informative and engaging voice for the MPU Campus Program across social media to ensure content is relevant to a young audience and the news cycle;
  • Ensuring publishing schedule is up to date, projects are on target, and publishing goals are met. Creating timelines for students to meet deadlines;
  • Monitoring analytics, audience sentiment, and social media trends, and translate learnings into actionable insights for staff on a weekly basis;
  • Routinely sending requests to students for pitches on topics MPU is most interested in covering;
  • Working with the Production Manager to ensure all shoots are scheduled on time, correct venues are booked and troubleshoot any issues with footage or freelance videographers;
  • Work with the Production Manager and Operations Team to ensure student journalists’ invoices are paid and budgets for student-generated content are maintained;
  • Coordinating with the vertical video team to coordinate coverage
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet expected deadlines
  • Maintain high standard of work in a nimble, fast paced environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Experience/Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in journalism/video production/social media content creation;
  • An excellent scriptwriter, producer, storyteller and collaborator, with strong interpersonal skills and experience in on-camera work;
