MUSIC DIRECTOR, SUMMER MUSICAL
What We Do
Sitar Arts Center engages DC youth, from early childhood to young adulthood, in building a creative community of learning and belonging that removes financial and cultural barriers to arts education and career training.
What You'll Do
Sitar Arts Center is seeking a wonderful, experienced Music Director to work with a range of young people to support Sitar's summer musical this June - August 2026.
Sitar produces a musical each summer that serves students in 4th-12th grade. This summer's production is The Lightning Thief:
Theatre for Young Audiences Edition. The Vocal Director ensures performers build singing skills in an engaging and joyful learning environment.
Responsibilities Include
- Lead instruction and direction of all vocal music for the musical, including ensemble, small group, and solo singing.
- Teach singing skills (ex. breath support, vocal placement, articulation, dynamics, pitch, etc.) to summer musical students to ensure healthy singing habits.
- Teach basic music reading skills as necessary through rehearsals (rhythm, dynamics, voice parts, time signature, etc.)
- Run daily rehearsal warm-ups with the choreographer and interns.
- Collaborate with the Conductor to ensure a unified musical vision for the show.
- Select audition and callback material in collaboration with the director and choreographer.
- Collaborate with the Stage Manager, Director, and Choreographer to ensure an inclusive rehearsal environment.
- Supervise musical students during run-throughs and other all-cast rehearsals in the theater.
For the musical, you will receive a stipend of $3,500. Stipend will increase if the candidate is additionally able to provide accompanimentduring rehearsals.
When You'll Work
This six-week seasonal position starts June 22, 2026, with a daily schedule of 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Performances will be held on July 30, 31, and August 1 at 7:00 pm, and on August 2 at 2:00 pm.
Other Required Work Dates will be provided before employment acceptance. All required work dates are paid, including:
- Orientation
- Audition Workshops
- Musical Intern Interviews
- Production Meetings
- Load In/Build Day
- Musical Performances
- Strike
As the Music Director, you are a positive, inclusive role model who is warm, supportive, and engaging. Key Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching music to youth is required.
- Experience building curriculum for grades 4th - 12th
- Previous experience working in a camp and musical setting.
- Experience in music directing or vocal coaching musicals in educational or community settings.
- Ability to provide rehearsal accompaniment.
- Knowledge of or experience with facilitating in inclusive learning communities, which can include differentiated instruction, equity, accessibility, and/or anti-racism practices.
- Background check and TB test
