The German Historical Institute Washington is now inviting applications for its Long-term Visiting Fellowships (2026). The fellowship supports doctoral and postdoctoral scholars conducting advanced historical research in areas including German, European, transatlantic, migration, and imperial history.
The fellowship is open to doctoral and postdoctoral scholars based at, or recent graduates of, North American or European universities or research institutes. Doctoral applicants must have ABD status before the fellowship begins, while postdoctoral applicants must be untenured. Applicants should propose a historical research project aligned with GHI’s thematic areas, with preference given to dissertation or second-book projects.
Eligibility Criteria- Eligible Countries: Applicants must be based at, or be recent graduates of, a North American or European university or research institute.
- Acceptable Course or Subjects: The fellowship supports historical research in the following thematic areas:
- German, European & Jewish History
- Transatlantic History & History of the Americas
- History of Migration & Mobility
- History of Empires and their Legacies
- Projects employing historical methods, engaging with relevant historiography, and/or using digital history approaches are especially encouraged.
