Requirements Job Overview The Assistant Director of Professional Development, School of Foreign Service (SFS) is responsible for liaising between the Cawley Career Education Center (Cawley) and SFS to provide strategic leadership and oversight in creating and delivering career development programming to approx. 1,400 undergraduate students. This programming and overall strategy will support the mission of empowering students to make career decisions associated with their interests, goals and objectives through career education, mentorship and self-reflection.
The ADPD oversees a range of professional development programs and services such as advising, career exploration, and recruitment preparation - with a focus on educating students about internship and job opportunities and experiential learning across industries and job functions. The ADPD will facilitate the utilization of all existing and new career services offered by Cawley including drop-in appointments, 1:1 counseling and industry advising, workshops, employer events, and career fairs.
The ADPD provides (or oversees) school-specific programming and career education. This includes:
1) participating in occasional staff meetings at SFS to discuss strategy and employer engagement, as well as areas for continued improvement in relations and collaboration with the Cawley Career Education Center;
2) liaising with Deans on student referrals and answering career questions specific to SFS students;
3) partnering with faculty and staff on current initiatives for SFS students;
4) presenting SFS and Cawley career services during new student orientation, GAAP and Parent–Family weekend.
Additionally, the ADPD serves as an Industry Advisor and Manager of Employer Relations - for Government, Nonprofit & Education – at Cawley and serves all students interested in those industries, regardless of their undergraduate school.
Work Interactions The ADPD reports to the Associate Director of Employer Relations and Industry Advising at the Cawley Career Education Center and participates in all staff and team meetings, interacts closely with students, alumni, employers, and university professionals to promote educational programs and internship/job opportunities to constituents. Supports the mission of the university by strengthening relationships with employers and alumni who work in the advisor’s areas of specialization.
The ADPD will build and maintain relationships with multiple constituencies including students, faculty, staff, alumni and employers. As a liaison between Cawley and SFS, the ADPD will collaborate and coordinate all career programming to promote equitable access, optimize overall effectiveness, and prevent redundant services. The Assistant Director may provide supervisory oversight for peer career advisors (approximately 1-2 undergraduate students) within Cawley.
