Materials Engineer – Materials Selection and Performance
Job Summary:
Design, evaluate, and recommend materials for construction and manufacturing systems. Analyze material performance, conduct site inspections, prepare technical documentation, and supervise inspections. Provide technical guidance to installers and project engineers.
- Review new plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives such as strength, weight, thermal properties, appearance, cost, and other factors.
- Conduct site inspections to gather additional data and intervening factors playing a role in the selection of materials, products, and/or systems.
- Confer with Design Engineers, Project Architects, sellers, and manufacturers.
- Prepare technical descriptions, drawings, illustrations, and step‑by‑step testing and inspection procedures.
- Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results published by manufacturers and other entities to prepare special installation, inspection, maintenance and repairs recommendations and guidelines.
- Oversee or supervise inspections of systems.
- Compile publications and reports on material performance and evaluations on material deterioration.
- Evaluate new projects and provide intelligence during bidding and planning processes.
- Guide technical staff and educate installers and project engineers on materials properties.
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering or related field plus five (5) years of experience.
- Master’s degree in Materials Engineering plus 6 months of experience (alternative).
Washington, DC
Salary$120,000 – $180,000 per year
