About the program:
Our organization has supported the U.S. Navy's Strategic Systems Program (SSP) continually since the program's inception in the 1950s. SSP developed the first sea-based, underwater-launched Strategic Weapon System (SWS), a defense system that is truly critical to our national security. For more than six decades, SSP has maintained and upgraded this weapon system and we have been there every step of the way.
The sea-based SWS is the ultimate stealthy weapon system and as the first leg of the U.S. nuclear triad. With over 70% of our nation's nuclear arsenal its importance to maintaining world peace cannot be overstated. The development of Columbia, the most advanced nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed submarine ever designed, as well the next D5LE2 weapon system is under way and will begin to be rolled out over the next decade.
The Navy projects this system to be operational through 2084, meaning the program will have a total life span of more than 120 years. This is a truly unique program and BAE Systems employees on this program understand they are part of an important legacy.
Position Description and Responsibilities:
This structural engineering candidate will assist in military construction (MILCON) project development, compliance reviews, constructability reviews and ensuring SSP specific requirements are incorporated into the structural portion of various design phases of the MILCON projects.
BAE Systems is seeking a structural engineer to support our work as a prime contractor on high-profile U.S Navy weapon systems. This structural engineer will support the Navy Program Manager responsible for Strategic Systems Planning (SSP) Facilities Acquisition at TRIDENT Submarine Bases, primarily at Kings Bay, Georgia and Bangor, Washington. The selected candidate will support technical peer reviews of architectural/engineering design submittals, support the develop of unique SSP facility requirements & testing criteria, and perform constructability reviews of A/E produced design documentation.
Candidate will also provide input and assist in the development of engineering study reports and help coordinate and resolve facility design/integration issues.
The specific duties and responsibilities of a structural engineer involve a wide range of tasks related to the design, analysis, and evaluation of facilities. Here is an overview of the key responsibilities:
- Review engineering design and documents and confirming specifications developed by others.
- Support construction projects by studying and developing project concept, architectural drawings, and models.
- Support development of Military Construction project development by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photographs, and tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and related topographical and geologic data.
- Determines project costs by calculating labor, material, and related costs.
- Creates feasibility study by analyzing engineering design, conducting environmental impact studies, and assembling data.
- Review and comment on engineering documents prepared by others to include construction specifications, plans, and schedules.
- Provide engineering information by answering questions and requests.
- Maintains project database by imputing data into computer programs (entering data) and completing backups.
- Contributes to team effort to accomplish tasks as needed.
