Senior Rail and Transit Engineer (Track Lead)

We are seeking a Senior Rail and Transit Engineer to join a well-established rail and transit practice supporting complex passenger and freight rail projects across the Mid-Atlantic.
This role is for a senior track engineer who leads rail track design, guides technical teams, and collaborates with public agencies and rail owners on high-visibility infrastructure programs.
The focus is on hands-on technical leadership in rail and transit track engineering.
Key Responsibilities- Lead rail and transit track design from project initiation to final delivery
- Serve as the technical lead or task lead on passenger and freight rail projects
- Oversee the preparation and review of track alignments, profiles, cross-sections, specifications, and cost estimates
- Ensure compliance with AREMA standards, FRA guidance, and agency-specific requirements
- Coordinate internal engineering teams to ensure accuracy, constructability, and adherence
- Support design-build efforts by collaborating with contractors to address field conditions and sequencing challenges
- Act as a technical point of contact for clients and agency partners
- Participate in project scoping, fee estimating, proposals, and technical interviews
- Mentor junior engineers and foster long-term technical development within the rail group
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- Sixteen or more years of experience in rail or transit track design
- Active Professional Engineer license in Maryland or ability to obtain one via reciprocity; additional Mid-Atlantic licensure is a plus
- Demonstrated experience delivering passenger and/or freight rail projects
- Strong working knowledge of AREMA standards and rail design practices
- Proficiency in Bentley tools, including Micro Station V8i, InRoads, and Open Rail Designer
- Experience coordinating with public agencies, transit authorities, or rail owners
- Strong organizational skills and ability to lead technical teams
- Experience serving as a track discipline lead or subject matter expert
- Design-build project experience
- Experience mentoring and reviewing work produced by junior and mid-level engineers
