Senior Protection and Control Design Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Protection and Control Design Engineer to join our T&D Engineering and Consulting Division. This is a remote opportunity to support high-impact projects across the U.S. and Canada. You'll lead the strategic execution of P&C design on large and complex substation and infrastructure projects for transmission and distribution facilities ranging from 13kV to 500kV. This includes developing protection scheme philosophies, overseeing multidisciplinary design integration, ensuring adherence to client and regulatory standards, and guiding the successful delivery of design packages through construction and commissioning.

What

You'll Do:
  • Lead the technical planning and conceptual design of substation protection and control systems, defining schematic logic, protection zones, and redundancy schemes
  • Develop protection philosophies that optimize system reliability, cost efficiency, and operational flexibility across substations and renewable energy sites
  • Oversee validation of entire DC and signal networks for performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance
  • Provide technical oversight and final approval of engineering deliverables, ensuring designs meet project requirements and industry standards
  • Resolve complex engineering challenges through cross-discipline coordination with physical design, SCADA/communications, and civil/structural teams
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison with clients, utilities, and regulatory agencies to define scope, review solutions, and maintain project alignment
  • Lead QA/QC and safety reviews to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices
  • Support commissioning and startup through relay testing, logic verification, and troubleshooting activities
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and designers through training, coaching, and technical reviews
  • Contribute to business development efforts, including proposal preparation, scope definition, and engineering estimates
  • Define schematic philosophies, protection zones, and logic hierarchy for complex station and renewable system design
  • Drive innovation and process improvement by developing tools, standards, and workflows to enhance design efficiency
  • Represent the organization in client meetings, design reviews, and industry forums to strengthen relationships and promote technical leadership
  • Oversee vendor and field coordination, ensuring seamless integration of control panels, relays, and field installations
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex technical issues during design, construction, and commissioning phases
The Experience We're Looking For:
  • 8+ years of experience in substation protection and control design for utility or consulting industry, including project leadership/
  • Deep understanding of relay protection principles (such as distance, differential, overcurrent, bus, and breaker failure
  • Proven track record of delivering complex P&C systems from concept to commissioning
  • Knowledge of SCADA integration, IEC 61850, and communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, and GOOSE
  • Experience working with major utilities, IPPs, and transmission developers
  • Experience with renewable interconnections, battery storage systems (BESS), and grid modernization projects
Additional Requirements:
  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • PE license or progress toward licensure
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required
  • Must be willing to travel approximately 25% of the time, including overnight travel
  • Flexibility to work occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed
