WBG Pioneer - Water Sector Industry Analyst Intern

WBG Pioneers, the World Bank Group's Internship Program, offers undergraduate and postgraduate students a high impact learning experience at the heart of global development. Within IFC, the Planet VPU brings together global efforts to address climate change, natural resources management, and environmental sustainability. In the Knowledge Bank, the Solutions and Impact Unit, plays a key role in developing and disseminating knowledge, tools and solutions to enhance the impact of investments and advisory activities.

Within this context, the Water Team contributes to advancing both public and private sector solutions in water supply, sanitation, wastewater, desalination and water reuse, with a strong focus resource efficiency, and service delivery improvements. The team supports investment and advisory operations through sector expertise, technical and knowledge development.

The goal of the Water Team is to advance water security for 400 million people by 2030, by scaling seven priority solutions addressing water for people, water for food, and water for the planet. The intern will mainly work in the water for people vertical (but not exclusively) and will support the Industry Specialists of the Water Team, supporting technical project analysis, sector analysis work, advisory projects management and knowledge management activities, contributing to the delivery of high-impact projects across emerging markets.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Technical support:
    Support technical review of investment and advisory projects, including analysis of sector context, demand forecasts, design documents and contracts. Assist in the review of technical documentation during due diligence and help identify key risks and gaps.
  • Impact analysis:
    Support the team in applying impact calculations methodologies and in developing internal monitoring tools and communication procedures.
  • Climate analysis:
    Support Paris Agreement alignment and climate finance assessments using MDB methodologies.
  • Knowledge management:
    Support the development of methodologies, templates and guidance materials for project appraisal and sector analysis. Coordinate knowledge dissemination work within the Knowledge bank and toward regional teams.

The intern will also interact with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, gaining exposure to global best practices.

Selection Criteria
  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in, or in the final year of postgraduate (master's/PhD) program
  • Candidates must have 0–6 years of relevant professional experience
  • Academic background in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related applied scientific discipline
  • Demonstrated interest in development work and the World Bank Group's mission
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse, team-based environments
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in English
  • Emerging market exposure is beneficial
  • Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese and/or Spanish language would be a plus
