Solar/BESS Electrical Engineer
Our client is seeking a talented Solar/BESS Electrical Engineer to join a growing team supporting renewable energy projects across the United States. This hybrid opportunity offers the flexibility to work remotely while collaborating with engineering and project teams on a diverse portfolio of renewable energy and distributed energy projects.
The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS), with experience supporting projects from feasibility and preliminary design through detailed engineering, construction, startup, and commissioning.
Projects may include commercial and industrial installations focused on resiliency, efficiency, and reliability, as well as utility-scale renewable energy systems designed to support interconnected power networks and high-density installations. Areas of focus may include solar PV, BESS, energy storage technologies, utility interconnection, agrivoltaics, floating PV, fuel cells, new site development, and other emerging energy technologies.
Key Responsibilities- Perform electrical engineering design work on assigned renewable energy projects under the guidance of senior engineering staff.
- Collaborate with Project Engineers and Project Managers to develop design schedules, budgets, and work plans for electrical engineering activities.
- Design and support Solar PV and BESS systems, including:
- Array layouts
- DC string sizing
- Equipment layouts
- Utility interconnections
- Rooftop, carport, and ground-mounted systems
- Fixed-tilt and single-axis tracking systems
- Perform solar PV and BESS energy production modeling.
- Develop construction and equipment specifications.
- Perform engineering calculations, including:
- NEC maximum system voltage
- Conductor sizing
- Overcurrent protection sizing
- Utility disconnect requirements
- Voltage drop
- Conduit sizing
- Develop and support construction drawings, including one-line diagrams, network diagrams, and related electrical documentation.
- Perform PV and BESS system cost estimates, payback evaluations, and financial analyses.
- Support DC and low- to medium-voltage power distribution design.
- Support projects throughout the full project lifecycle, including feasibility, preliminary design, detailed design, issue-for-bid, construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Participate in project meetings and present technical information to clients, project teams, and other stakeholders.
- Provide technical leadership and support for engineering tasks and deliverables.
- Travel occasionally to support project meetings, construction activities, site assessments, and commissioning activities.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
- Experience designing and integrating utility-scale renewable energy and battery energy storage systems.
- Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and renewable energy system design.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable electrical safety and construction standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary project environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to obtain additional state licenses through comity.
- 8+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
- Proficiency with industry software such as Plant Predict, PVsyst, HOMER, NREL SAM, Forge Solar, and Helio Scope.
- Experience with medium-voltage AC collection system design.
- Protection and controls experience.
- Experience with power system modeling software such as ETAP and/or SKM.
- Strong familiarity with NEC, IBC, NFPA 855, NESC, IEEE standards, and other applicable industry codes and practices.
- Experience with utility interconnection requirements and practices.
- Ability to perform financial evaluations, including CAPEX, OPEX, PPA recommendations, ROI, and payback calculations.
- Experience with specialized renewable energy technologies such as floating PV, fuel cells, agrivoltaics, supercapacitors, or other emerging energy technologies.
- Field construction, startup, and commissioning experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead engineering tasks and deliver high-quality technical work.
