The selectee of this position serves as a harness engineer in the Electrical Systems Integration Section in the Spacecraft Engineering Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). This position is responsible for the design of the harness for spaceflight programs. This position includes a varied responsibility set to include development of test and/or flight harness designs using design software packages, creating the schematics and netlists of the harness design, procuring and tracking of all parts related to the harness design, coordination with all subsystem engineers and technicians, support electrical testing of the harnesses per specification, support environmental testing of the harnesses, etc.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with a small team of engineers, technicians, customers, and others to determine harness subsystem requirements
  • Design and develop harness specifications and technical drawings, including wire-list/schematic, mechanical drawing, and parts list
  • Ensure that designs conform to standards and customer requirements
  • Analyze designs for proper operation over environmental operating conditions, and compliance with the parts control and contamination control plans
  • Analyze harness mechanical properties including bundle diameter, mass, bend radius, and wire length
  • Analyze harness electrical properties including rated voltage, derated current carrying capacity, series resistance, and line drop
  • Procure and track parts needed for all aspects of the harness: wire/cable, wire mounts, connectors, backshells, shielding, tooling hardware, mock-ups, etc.
  • Oversee the build of the harness
  • Oversee the installation of the harness
  • Write test requirements, plans, and procedures
  • Support validation testing of the harness
  • Write reports and compile test data
  • Preparation of documentation including specifications, interface control documents, and white papers, as required
  • Present and defend designs to broader audiences for review and approval
  • Manage resources, such as schedules and budgets, for work being performed

This position requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to use schematic capture tools, such as Cadence OrCAD.
  • Desired ability to use mechanical CAD software, such as Siemens NX.
  • Knowledge of EMI susceptibility and noise control principles
  • Knowledge of high speed differential signaling
  • Knowledge of power distribution and grounding
  • Ability to read and interpret component datasheets and drawings.
  • Understanding and demonstrated application of space industry standards and environmental requirements including NASA-STD-8739.1, NASA-STD-8739.4, IPC-J-STD-001
    * S, NASA EEE-INST-002, MIL-STD-461.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain an interim and/or final (e.g., Secret) security clearance prior to entrance on duty AND must be able to maintain the required level of clearance while employed in the subject position.
  • This position may eventually require obtaining and maintaining a Top Secret clearance which entails further background investigation and drug testing.
