ABOUT THE POSITION
Traffic Engineer | Washington, DC | Tysons, VA | Hybrid
VHB’s growing Washington, DC and Tysons, VA team is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our Transportation team. This role is ideal for a motivated mid-level engineer with a strong traffic engineering design background who is looking to expand their project management experience and grow into a future leadership role. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of traffic engineers and transportation planners who value technical excellence, innovation, mentorship, and delivering solutions that improve mobility and safety for all users.
This position will support a wide range of VDOT and public agency transportation projects throughout Northern Virginia, with a strong emphasis on traffic signal design, pedestrian safety improvements, pavement markings, and signing. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to high-profile statewide transportation contracts while working closely with senior leadership and developing long-term career growth within the team.
Responsibilities
- Prepare traffic signal design plans for VDOT and local agency transportation projects
- Support VDOT statewide and district transportation contracts, including across Northern Virginia
- Develop traffic engineering design packages including signing, pavement markings, and pedestrian safety improvements
- Assist with quick-build traffic design
- Support the design and implementation of multimodal transportation improvements that consider motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users of all ages and abilities
- Apply VDOT standards, specifications, and engineering best practices to transportation projects
- Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams, clients, and agency staff
- Assist with project management responsibilities including task coordination, schedule management, and client communication
- Support public outreach activities and presentations for transportation projects
- Conduct traffic operational and safety studies for intersections and corridors as needed
- Contribute to transportation policy, planning, and design guidance efforts as needed
- Work closely with senior leadership on opportunities for continued professional growth and increasing project responsibility
Skills and Attributes
- Strong technical background in traffic engineering design
- Experience with traffic signal design and VDOT transportation projects
- Knowledge of pavement markings, signing, and pedestrian safety design principles
- Familiarity with VDOT standards and procedures
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and work both independently and collaboratively
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Interest in developing project management and leadership capabilities
- Experience presenting technical information to clients, agencies, or the public is beneficial
- Team-oriented with a proactive and growth-focused mindset
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of professional experience in traffic engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Experience with VDOT and/or public agency transportation projects in Northern Virginia preferred
- Strong experience in traffic engineering design with emphasis on traffic signals
- Familiarity with Micro Station and traffic engineering design software preferred
- Experience with transportation planning or traffic studies is beneficial
- PTOE certification is a plus
The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $140,000 if located in the Metro DC area. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.
Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package.
