Role Overview :

The Senior Traffic Engineer leads transportation planning and engineering projects with a focus on traffic analysis, multimodal studies, and Traffic Impact Analyses (TIAs). This role serves as a key technical and project leader, overseeing project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and client communication while ensuring projects meet applicable standards and local regulations. The Senior Traffic Engineer also plays an important role in mentoring and developing junior staff, collaborating across teams, and delivering high-quality solutions that meet client and community needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform and support traffic analysis, modeling, simulation, and technical studies, translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Analyze traffic and transportation data to identify trends, evaluate system performance, and inform project recommendations.
  • Develop Transportation Demand Management (TDM) plans and strategies to reduce congestion, improve mobility, and optimize multimodal travel
  • Mentor and support junior staff, sharing technical knowledge and contributing to a culture of professional development and continuous learning.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, presentations, analyses, and project documentation for clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring projects remain on track and meet quality expectations.
  • Lead client and stakeholder meetings, communicate technical findings effectively, and build strong, collaborative relationships.
  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies to support project approvals and ensure compliance with applicable transportation standards and regulations, including agencies such as VDOT, DDOT, and county planning departments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of professional experience in traffic/transportation engineering, planning, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • PE license or active pursuit of professional licensure preferred/required depending on role expectations.
  • A genuine passion for collaboration, teamwork, and working across disciplines to develop practical solutions.
