Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.
Reporting to the Deputy CFO, the Assistant Controller leads a three‑person general ledger and tax team, overseeing cash flow, general ledger activity, and financial reporting for APA and its affiliated real estate entities (APA Ten G, APA 750, and the Conference Center). The role includes managing audits, tax filings, and financial statements across multiple entities, supervising staff accountants, and overseeing a contracted accounting service provider.
Responsibilities- Responsible for monthly, quarterly and year‑end general ledger closures for APA.
- Plan, assign, review, and approve work of staff accountants, i.e., account schedules, bank reconciliations, credit card and bank fee analyses, journal entries, fee allocations, the running of monthly APA reports, and loading them on a portal for access by all users.
- Manage cash flow, cash transfers and the line of credit.
- Maintain bank account set up and signature authority; interact with bank representatives, vendors, and service providers.
- Maintain the chart of accounts in the accounting system.
- Ensure proper internal controls, manage compliance with debt covenants, review and approve dues and subscription rate tables and account strings.
- Responsible for the accounting and reporting for the LLCs. Oversee external contracted accountants; ensure that monthly reports and schedules prepared by external accountants, including those for depreciation, straight‑line rent expense, commissions receivable/amortization, are complete and accurate. Calculate annual management fee charges to LLCs. Manage audits, monitor policies and procedures, guide, train and educate, maintain understanding of lease accounting, review lease agreements.
- Responsible for APA consolidated financial statements and tax return preparation. Serve as the main contact to audit and tax consultants; ensure timely audit wrap‑ups and tax filings for all entities; conduct tax research; calculate and make timely estimated tax deposits; use system knowledge and computer skills to automate processes where possible.
- Manage the 401(k) audit and 5500 filing.
- Interact with audit and tax consultants, IRS and DC regulators, Audit Subcommittee members, and staff throughout the association. Maintain the Finance Policies & Procedures Manual; ensure internal controls and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; test, develop, and refine controls and procedures as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Education:
Bachelor's in accounting or Bachelor's in Finance with accounting concentration. - CPA required.
- Nonprofit Accounting Expertise
- 12+ years of accounting experience including general ledger management and financial reporting.
- Strong understanding of nonprofit financial operations and compliance, gained through direct nonprofit roles or public accounting experience with nonprofit clients.
- In‑depth knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting standards to manage audits, tax filings and regulatory interactions.
- Extensive knowledge of GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting standards; strong analytical skills and experience with lease accounting and depreciation schedules.
- Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Proven experience supervising or mentoring a small accounting team and managing external accounting contractors, ensuring a collaborative approach to working across departments and building organization‑wide financial understanding.
- Ability to train and guide staff on accounting policies and procedures with excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Support for Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Experience compiling/reviewing data, preparing reports, and contributing to financial analysis in support of budgeting, forecasting, and planning processes led by senior leadership.
- Sound Judgment and Integrity
- Trusted to handle sensitive financial information with discretion and professionalism.
