About the Global Markets Analysis Division (GA)

The Global Markets Analysis Division plays a central role in understanding and interpreting developments in global financial markets. Its work underpins some of the IMF’s most influential research outputs, most notably the Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR). This flagship publication is widely read by policymakers, central bankers, academics, and market participants around the world.

GA’s mandate goes beyond traditional economic monitoring. The division combines advanced data analytics

, and investor outreach to provide a forward-looking assessment of risks and vulnerabilities in the global financial system. As financial markets become increasingly complex and data-intensive, GA is also at the forefront of leveraging automation, big data, and artificial intelligence to enhance market surveillance and economic analysis.

The Research Officer / Senior Research Officer (MCMGA) will work closely with economists, research officers, and financial sector experts across the Monetary and Capital Markets Department. The position is designed for professionals who are equally comfortable with rigorous quantitative analysis and practical market monitoring.

At its core, this role supports the division’s technical, analytical, and operational projects
. This includes contributing to major research initiatives and playing an active role in the production of the Global Financial Stability Report. Successful candidates will engage deeply with large and complex datasets, applying advanced statistical and econometric techniques to generate insights that inform global policy discussions.

The responsibilities of the position are both broad and impactful:

  • Research and Analytical Support:
    The role involves processing and managing large datasets, coding and implementing econometric and statistical procedures, developing analytical tools, producing charts and visualizations, and interpreting results in a policy-relevant context. These contributions directly feed into IMF research outputs, including the GFSR.
  • Data and Analytics Infrastructure Development:
    A distinctive aspect of this role is its strong focus on building and maintaining the analytical infrastructure of the GA division. The Research Officer will liaise with the IMF’s Information and Technology Department (ITD) to automate asset pricing models, yield curve frameworks, financial metrics, and market monitoring dashboards. This work supports GA’s long-term strategic framework for data and analytics.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Innovation:
    The selected candidate will take a leading role in expanding the use of artificial intelligence applications within GA and MCM. These tools are increasingly used to monitor financial markets, detect emerging risks, and enhance economic analysis in real time.
