We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Tax Manager to support the Controller in overseeing domestic and international tax compliance and planning activities related to global operations. This role is based in Washington, DC and plays a critical part in identifying tax planning opportunities, enhancing internal tax processes, managing external tax advisor relationships, and overseeing the organization’s expatriate program. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong technical expertise in partnership taxation and international compliance, who can translate complex tax matters into actionable guidance for leadership.
ResponsibilitiesDomestic Tax & Compliance
- Oversee domestic tax preparation processes, including management of state tax election consents and review of quarterly composite and PTE estimates
- Serve as primary liaison with external tax preparers to enhance efficiencies and manage costs
- Review annual U.S. tax return work papers and act as the main point of contact for finalizing tax returns and K-1 filings
- Identify and implement tax planning strategies to optimize tax positions for the organization and its partners
- Monitor legislative changes and proactively advise leadership on potential impacts
- Manage state nexus compliance and conduct research regarding multistate exposure due to employee relocations or new client activity
- Review monthly and quarterly Sales & Use Tax filings and support audit or compliance initiatives as needed
- Assist with oversight of fixed assets, depreciation schedules, and annual personal property tax filings
- Ensure accurate preparation of M-1 work papers, optimize deductibility rules, and recommend process improvements to reduce audit risk
- Oversee and manage the expatriate program, serving as liaison with global mobility vendors and tax consultants
- Coordinate international entity tax filings across multiple jurisdictions, including Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East
- Review and/or prepare financial data related to international revenue recognition and withholding requirements
- Monitor international tax law changes and implement compliance updates
- Identify opportunities to reduce foreign tax exposure within applicable regulations
- Review VAT filings and ensure compliance with IRS withholding requirements (including W-8
BEN documentation) - Support multi-currency considerations and foreign tax reporting requirements
- Serve as an internal resource for ad-hoc international tax matters and provide clear reporting to management
- Develop and monitor annual budgets related to expatriate programs, tax advisory services, and related tax expenses
- Analyze monthly budget variances and provide recommendations
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- CPA required
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant industry experience
- Strong experience in partnership taxation required
- Experience in professional services environments utilizing cash/tax basis accounting preferred
- Knowledge of accrual accounting for international compliance purposes
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly advanced Excel skills; familiarity with Power BI preferred
- Basic understanding of U.S. tax equalization and hypothetical tax calculations
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders
