Controller, Finance & Banking, Financial Manager

The Health & Fitness Association is seeking a Controller to work in its Washington, DC, office. The Controller / Vice President of Finance is responsible for the Association’s day‑to‑day accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls. This is a hands‑on role in a small finance team, focused on accuracy, stewardship, and sound nonprofit financial management, with regular interaction with senior leadership and the Board.

Strategic Financial Advisor and President & CEO

• Manage and perform core accounting functions, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll review, cash management, and reconciliations
• Lead monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes
• Maintain accounting policies and internal controls in accordance with GAAP
• Ensure proper tracking and reporting of restricted funds and program revenues
• Lead the annual audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
• Prepare or oversee Form 990 and required federal and state filings
• Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor performance against budget
• Prepare monthly financial statements and variance analysis
• Present financial information to management and Board Finance/Audit Committees
• Monitor cash flow and reserves to support financial stability
• Supervise and support a small finance team
• Oversee accounting systems and maintain well‑documented financial procedures

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
• CPA preferred
• 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Nonprofit or association accounting experience required
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, audits, internal controls, and Form 990
• Experience working with senior leadership and Boards

• Hybrid position based in Washington, DC, with regular in‑office presence required.
