This position is in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (DMPSJ). This Office supports the Deputy Mayor by providing direction, guidance, support, and coordination to the District’s public safety agencies to develop and lead interagency public safety initiatives to improve the quality of life in the District’s neighborhoods.
Incumbent serves as a Legislative Analyst responsible for managing DMPSJ’s legislative portfolio including analyzing, reviewing, and providing recommendations on rules, regulations, policy, and legislation that impact DMPSJ and its agencies.
Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent is responsible for drafting rules, policy, and legislation; monitoring legislation before the Council of the District of Columbia (Council) and United States Congress; strategizing with DMPSJ and agency staff regarding local, Federal, regional, Council and Congressional relations; and writing reports and testimony for presentation. The incumbent will work with the Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff in managing DMPSJ’s legislative portfolio and developing legislative strategies for promoting initiatives and programs.
Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with key program officials to remain thoroughly conversant with operational needs of DMPSJ. Keeps abreast of significant scheduled events that include Council and Congressional hearings and legislative activities.
Produces written documents including testimonies, statements, letters, and other informational materials. Coordinates the development and interagency review of legislative proposals from the Executive Office of the Mayor of the District of Columbia. Reviews proposed legislation, committee reports, and other legislative documents and materials to determine potential impact and need for action. Assists with the review of the current DC laws and regulations to ensure that existing and proposed DMPSJ’s policies, procedures, and regulations are consistent with governing law. Identifies and integrates key issues affecting the Office, including political, economic, social, technological, and administrative factors. Compiles statistical and status reports of assigned matters.
Specialized
Experience:
This position requires one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the District of Columbia government. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Salary: $ 93,069 - $119,916;

Position Designation: This position has been designated as security-sensitive therefore the incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability, and as such, incumbents of this position shall be subject to criminal background checks, background investigations, and mandatory drug and alcohol testing, as applicable.
Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
