Surgical Assistant – Certified C‑SA

Minimum Education and Experience Required
  • Clinical education and training specific to performing duties as a Certified Surgical Assistant, C‑SA or Certified Surgical First Assistant, C‑SFA.
  • Certification must be obtained from a program approved by the Commission for the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), or a dedicated training program for Surgical Assistants in the armed forces, or by meeting the Board of Surgical Assistants’ requirement of full‑time work in the United States under a physician’s direct supervision with at least 1,300 hours of performance in the 3 years preceding the application date.

    Certified candidates must have successfully completed the National Surgical Assistant Association’s (NSAA) exam or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting exam, and must provide documentation of certification or recertification by one of the following:
    National Surgical Assistant Association, National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or the American Board of Surgical Assistants.
  • Completion of appropriate continuing medical education to maintain certification.
  • Maintenance of licensure with the District of Columbia, renewed every 2 years, including proof of completion during the preceding 2‑year period of at least fifty (50) CEU credits.
  • BLS required; to be renewed every 2 years.
  • At least one year of experience as a practicing Surgical Assistant.

    Salary Range:
    Minimum $42.66 per hour – Maximum $70.36 per hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

    In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
