T he Surgical Technician (Surg Tech) in the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is responsible for providing direct support to surgeons and the perioperative team during surgical and procedural cases. This role ensures the operating/procedure room is prepared, sterile technique is maintained, and appropriate instrumentation and supplies are available for safe and efficient patient care.

This position supports multiple surgical service lines including Interventional Radiology (IR), Vascular, Pain Management, Urology, General Surgery, OB/GYN, Colorectal, Gastrointestinal (GI), and Vein procedures.

The Surgical Technician works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, and other clinical staff to promote optimal patient outcomes in a fast-paced outpatient environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare operating and procedure rooms according to procedure‑specific preference cards.
  • Ensure availability and functionality of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform surgical scrubbing, gowning, and gloving in accordance with sterile technique.
  • Verify sterilization indicators and ensure proper instrument processing standards are met.
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and room setup.
  • Participate in surgical time‑outs and safety checklists.
  • Maintain strict sterile field throughout procedures.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and pass instruments, sutures, implants, and supplies efficiently.
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialty equipment (e.g., C‑arm, endoscopic towers, IR equipment, electrosurgical units, insufflators, laser equipment, vascular devices).
  • Assist with specimen handling and labeling.
  • Support hemostasis and wound closure processes.
  • Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps with circulating nurse.
  • Assist with procedural documentation as required.
  • Assist with room turnover, cleaning, and preparation for next case.
  • Ensure proper handling, decontamination, and transport of instruments.
  • Restock supplies and maintain par levels.
  • Report equipment malfunctions or supply shortages promptly.
Service Line‑Specific Support

The Surgical Technician must demonstrate competency in supporting procedures within:

  • C‑arm Procedures
  • Interventional Radiology (IR):
    Catheter‑based procedures, image‑guided interventions, vascular access procedures.
  • Vascular Surgery:
    Endovascular procedures, angioplasty, stent placement, vein ablation.
  • Pain Management:
    Epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulator trials/implants.
  • Urology:
    Cystoscopy, TURP, stone procedures, minimally invasive urologic cases.
  • General Surgery:
    Laparoscopic and minor open procedures.
  • OB/GYN:
    Hysteroscopy, D&C, minimally invasive gynecologic procedures.
  • Colorectal:
    Anorectal procedures, minimally invasive colorectal cases.
  • Gastrointestinal (GI):
    Endoscopic procedures, PEG placement, therapeutic endoscopy support.
  • Vein Procedures:
    Endo venous ablation, sclerotherapy support, phlebectomy
Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of surgical technician experience preferred; ASC or multi‑specialty experience highly desirable.

Experience

  • Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterile technique.
  • Ability to anticipate procedural flow across multiple specialties.
  • Familiarity with minimally invasive and image‑guided procedures.
  • Working knowledge of infection prevention standards and regulatory requirements (AAAASF, Joint Commission, CMS, etc.).
  • Ability to function efficiently in a high‑volume outpatient setting.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing case volumes and service line demands.

Licensure

  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential preferred or required per state regulations.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS preferred (depending on facility policy).
  • Fast‑paced ambulatory surgery center.
  • Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, radiation, and surgical equipment.
  • Requires prolonged standing, lifting, bending, and manual dexterity.
  • Participation in on‑call rotation may be required (if applicable).

Physical Requirements
