For nearly 50 years, House of Ruth has empowered women, children, and families to rebuild their lives and heal from trauma, abuse, and houselessness. We offer comprehensive services for survivors, including service-enriched housing, nationally accredited child and family development programming, and free counseling to anyone who has experienced domestic violence.
Position SummaryThe Mental Health Clinician provides individual counseling and therapy and facilitates therapeutic and psycho educational groups. Maintain a regular caseload of individual clients and ongoing groups. Develop therapeutic relationships with clients, assess strengths and needs, establish goals, implement and monitor treatment plans. Participates in outreach services both within House of Ruth and across other social service organizations, as appropriate.
Individuals who meet the licensing or license eligible criteria who have experience as front line case managers with traumatized individuals are encouraged to apply.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide counseling services to clients.
- Offer crisis intervention based on assessed emergency needs.
- Meet regularly with clients to develop a therapeutic relationship, assess strengths and needs, formulate a treatment plan and counseling goals in collaboration with clients and implements that plan.
- Complete all appropriate forms and maintain accurate, thorough documentation in a timely manner reflecting all client contacts and counseling functions and activities.
- Communicate essential issues to relevant contacts, gather and incorporate information from other sources regarding the client.
- Maintain collaborative relationships in support of client outcomes.
- Identify resources and link clients to a comprehensive set of services. Advocate for services to assist clients.
- Establish and maintain professional contacts with House of Ruth staff and staff from other organizations to ensure coordinated services.
- Develop and conduct psycho-educational and/or support groups and activities addressing domestic violence both within House of Ruth and externally.
- Attend all training sessions, participate in regular clinical supervision and weekly staff meetings.
- Conduct ongoing assessment in support of the Domestic Violence Support Center outcome reporting activities.
- Promote a safe, secure, and non-violent environment for clients and staff.
- Effectively manage all emergencies by following standard procedures. Report maintenance problems as observed.
- Screen telephone calls and walk-ins.
- Provide crisis intervention and make appropriate referrals.
- Support the Domestic Violence Support Center’s administrative operations.
- Support the overall mission of House of Ruth and the Domestic Violence Support Center through implementation of staff wellness initiatives.
- Master’s degree or equivalent and licensed or license eligible as a professional counselor (LGPC/LPC), social worker (LGSW/LICSW), in the District of Columbia.
- Must have experience working with and providing therapeutic services to traumatized individuals.
- 1-3 years post licensure experience preferred
- Successfully passing the following pre-employment process is required:

- Police Clearance
- Must be COVID vaccinated
- Strong analytical, planning and organizing skills
- Self-starter with good time management skills
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office 365
- High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations
