Job PurposeThe Perinatal Sonographer participates in the care of the patient, under the direct supervision of the Physician and in collaboration with the healthcare team by performing various fetal examinations, assisting in invasive procedures, reporting results of sonographic examinations, and ensuring patient safety and comfort during ultrasound procedures. The ideal candidate will specialize in high-risk obstetric imaging and be passionate about delivering exceptional prenatal care in a supportive and collaborative family focused environment alongside perinatologists and other healthcare professionals.
This full-time position offers a 4-day work week to promote work-life balance without compromising patient care. Responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, equipment performance, and clinical sonographic quality assessment. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for adherence to Howard University FPP Privacy Policy policies and procedures, as well as all applicable federal and state laws as they pertain to healthcare and employment.

Nature And Scope- Perform all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
- Acquire and analyze data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies.
- Meet examination components as defined by Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, department procedures, established protocols, and AIUM’s examination guidelines.
- Greet patients and guests, explain ultrasound procedures, prepare patients for appropriate examination according to department policies. Support patients and their families in a compassionate manner.
- Verify accuracy of ultrasound requisition by checking physician’s orders in the patient’s medical record.
- Interview patients to gather history pertinent to the ultrasound examination.
- Use independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.
- Conduct fetal exams including 1st trimester ultrasound, nuchal translucency measurement, 2nd trimester basic and detailed anatomic survey, 3rd trimester ultrasound, limited examinations, follow up examinations, transvaginal examinations, and biophysical profiles.
- Assist perinatologists in invasive procedures such as amniocentesis.
- Provide summary findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management.
- Prepare accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports on the Viewpoint system.
- Collaborate closely with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, genetic counselors, nurses, and referring providers to ensure comprehensive care.
- Perform portable examinations as ordered.
- Maintain equipment as instructed. Report equipment failures to the Lead Sonographer.
- Perform daily pre-visit planning and assign related clerical duties as required.
- Work in accordance with FPP and department policies regarding documentation and billing for ultrasound services.
- Responsible for room preparation, stocking, clean-up, and equipment sterilization as needed.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of all patients in the sonographic area/department. Monitor, observe and recognize any abnormal changes in patients’ conditions and respond appropriately to emergencies with adequate handoff as needed.
