General Summary of Position

Med Star Ambulatory Services is committed to providing world-class compassionate care to every patient every time at every touch point. All associates are accountable for their role in meeting patient experience standards. Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery.

• Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure.
• Assists with case preparation following preference card guidelines.
• Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
• Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
• Functions as surgical assistant during operative procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors.
• Identifies and handles specimens appropriately.
• Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
• May function as a technical resource person for OR staff providing information relating to instruments and equipment.
• Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
• Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
• Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt courteous positive and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree from a school of surgical technology or completion of hospital-based training required.
• Experience: Less than 1 year 6 months experience as a surgical technologist or graduation from a school of surgical technology program required. One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

  Certifications:
  
  CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required. Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Competency in case procedure preparation and completion in all services. Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.

USD $29.73 - $53.49 /Hr.
