Manager, Sterile Processing

Location: Howard University Hospital – Washington, DC

Role Summary

The Manager, Sterile Processing provides operational and people leadership for Sterile Processing, Decontamination, and Endoscopy reprocessing services. This role is accountable for instrument and scope reprocessing quality, sterilization monitoring, regulatory readiness, staff competency, and performance improvement to ensure safe, reliable case and procedure readiness across the hospital.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead day-to-day operations of Sterile Processing and Decontamination, ensuring consistent, safe, and efficient workflow performance.
  • Oversee Endoscopy reprocessing operations and ensure compliant scope reprocessing practices and documentation.
  • Develop and manage a quality improvement program targeting 100% accuracy in delivery of carts, pans, and packaged instruments.
  • Ensure sterilization monitoring, biological indicator processes, equipment functionality, and complete recordkeeping for sterilizers and reprocessing equipment.
  • Manage staff scheduling, orientation, training, competency validation, ongoing education, and annual performance evaluations.
  • Maintain and optimize inventory control systems, charge capture/accounting processes, and daily instrument/supply availability.
  • Build, maintain, and report an SPD performance dashboard at least monthly for leadership and staff visibility.
  • Partner with Nursing, Perioperative Services, Dental, Infection Prevention, and other stakeholders to develop and maintain sterilization policies and procedures.
  • Support regulatory readiness (e.g., Joint Commission, DOH) and ensure alignment with applicable standards and guidelines (including AAMI).
  • Identify capital equipment needs and support capital planning, resource management, and materials management functions within perioperative services.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) – Required.
  • Ten (10) or more years of sterile processing experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing practices, quality/performance improvement principles, and materials/inventory management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with providers, patients, and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.

Preferred:

  • Experience as a Surgical Technologist or other clinical/medical background.
  • Experience with inventory systems, instrument tracking, and analytics/reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting accreditation or regulatory survey readiness.

Pay + Schedule

Department: Perioperative Services (Sterile Processing / Decontamination / Endoscopy Reprocessing)
Reports To: Director, Perioperative Services
FLSA Status: Exempt
Union: Non-Union
Pay Range / Grade: HA3-17 ($84,680 – $135,488)
Schedule: Primarily days; flexibility required for operational needs, off-shifts, and regulatory readiness activities as needed.
