They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side.

OVERVIEW

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) seeks experienced and highly motivated candidates to fill the position of Advancement Specialist. The position is located within the NMAI Museum Advancement group, and the purpose of the position is to support all aspects of the museum’s fund-raising efforts by assisting advancement staff with high levels of support functions associated with gift accounting, stewardship, donor relations, communication, research, special projects and events.

The NMAI is responsible for affirming to Native communities and the non-Native public, the historical and contemporary culture and cultural achievements of the Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere by advancing, in consultation, collaboration and cooperation with them, a knowledge and understanding of their cultures, including art, history, and language, and by recognizing the Museum's special responsibility, through innovative public programming, research, and collections, to protect, support, and enhance the development, maintenance, and perpetuation of Indigenous culture and community.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works with the unit Advancement Director or senior advancement personnel to assist in the development of processes, projects, and materials, as needed. Composes and drafts correspondence for review and approval by the supervisor.
  • Prepares reports and materials needed for donor engagement, solicitation, and stewardship in consultation with the supervisor to determine the best possible approach.
  • Assists with the stewardship of donors in maintaining continuous engagement and acknowledges gifts from donors.
  • Prepares correspondence and assists senior staff in preparing detailed proposals.
  • Plans, manages and executes special events and/ or educational programs for donors such as symposia, tours, receptions, and other cultivation events. The incumbent coordinates and attends meetings associated with the events, and coordinates directly with vendors up until the conclusion of the events.
  • Manages, prepares and tracks approval of gift agreements, memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and other gift-related documentation.
  • Contributes to the development of metrics and other measurements to evaluate success of advancement efforts. Tracks and evaluates data, and prepares analysis requiring graphs and charts for use by management in assessing results.
