Engineering Director – UL Research Institutes (Remote)

The Engineering Director for the Digital Safety team will lead a growing team of software, AI engineers, and evaluators to modernize the AI/digital testing and evaluation ecosystem. You will work closely with independent review organizations and auditors to define DSRI’s research role in modernizing the greater AI/digital test and auditing ecosystem. The role collaborates with ULRI directors, leaders, and colleagues across the UL research organizations to advance the mission and growth of Digital Safety.

• Lead software engineering across the Digital Safety Research Institute, focusing on creating open‑source tools for advanced independent auditing and testing.
• Use advanced independent auditing and testing tools to create experimental assessments of rapidly advancing AI/digital systems.
• In collaboration with the Executive Director of Digital Safety teams, define key performance indicators (KPIs) and embed KPI measurements into the engineering process.
• Hire, lead, and develop a high‑performing team of AI and software engineers to build prototype platforms and tools to test and evaluate AI/digital systems.
• Define and manage Digital Safety teams’ digital infrastructure needs to support research and engineering efforts.
• Manage software engineering resources to ensure MVP and updates with KPIs are delivered on time and within budget.
• Collaborate with Digital Safety leadership in strategic planning and the annual budget processes.

• Expert knowledge in cloud and mobile application development, database management, and application testing automation.
• Practical knowledge of current Dev Sec Ops  and MLOps best practices applicable to Digital Safety software development and deployment.
• Problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and develop practical solutions in collaboration with colleagues.
• Experience mentoring AI and software engineers to develop needed skills.
• Leadership skills to create alignment and buy‑in with multiple stakeholders and deliver results.
• Positive, collaborative attitude and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff at any level.
• High curiosity and a continuous learning mentality.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with enthusiasm to engage stakeholders.
• Ability to operate strategically and operationally, with attention to detail, focus on quality, speed, and outcomes.

• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or other STEM discipline.
• Minimum 10 years of proven software engineering and deployment experience, including software testing.
• Experience managing and/or mentoring distributed software engineering teams, including open‑source developers.
• Experience planning, developing, deploying, monitoring production systems, and maintaining operations.
