Assistant General Counsel - FERC

Location: Columbus, Ohio (HQ) or Washington, D.C.
Compensation: $183,000 - $238,000 base salary plus bonus eligibility and comprehensive benefits

What You'll Do
  • Serve as lead counsel for federal regulatory matters before FERC, including rates, tariffs, policy, compliance, and litigation
  • Provide legal advice to internal stakeholders on FERC jurisdictional issues under the Federal Power Act, Department of Energy Organization Act, and related statutes
  • Represent the company in Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) stakeholder proceedings in PJM, SPP, and MISO
  • Prepare and oversee filings, including comments, briefs, motions, testimony, and regulatory submissions before FERC and state commissions
  • Support interconnection, transmission, generation, and rate-related issues for the company's operating subsidiaries
  • Collaborate with federal affairs, regulatory, and policy teams on rule makings, compliance strategies, and legislative matters
  • Assess and recommend risk management strategies tied to federal regulatory issues
  • Provide advocacy, negotiation, and representation in hearings, settlement discussions, and administrative proceedings
What We're Looking For

Education
  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in Ohio or Washington, D.C. (or eligibility under Ohio corporate practice rules)
Experience
  • Minimum 8 years of legal practice, with at least 5 years focused on FERC-related matters
  • Experience representing clients before FERC or a state/federal regulatory agency
  • Background with transmission, RTOs, rate recovery, tariff filings, and regulatory compliance
  • Litigation and hearing experience (briefing, preparing witnesses, case evaluation, and appearances in administrative or federal forums)
Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent advocacy, negotiation, and written/oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while fostering strong internal and external relationships
  • Strong judgment, problem-solving skills, and initiative
  • Collaborative style with ability to work across legal, regulatory, finance, and operations teams
